Default Caliper swap questions...

Hi All,

I bought a used set of calipers, which I'll be painting with the G2 red paint and had some questions about the caliper swap... I've removed the calipers before when I replaced my rotors but I don't have experience in disconnecting the brake lines... I’ll also be bleeding the fluid to use ATE Blue.

The GM manual says to Remove the inlet fitting bolt, inlet fitting, and two gaskets. Discard the two gaskets, and plug the openings in the brake caliper and the inlet fitting.

Do I really have to replace the two gaskets? Can't I reuse them? And what do I plug the caliper and inlet fitting with and why? Since I'm replacing them, shouldn’t I want to release all the fluid once the inlet is removed? Should I be clamping off the hoses? Hmmm… I’m wondering if this would work…? Before removing the inlet, clamp of the hose and loosen the bleed screw and release the fluid until it stops. Then remove the inlet and the other caliper bolts.

Appreciate any help, tips or tricks…

Rich

1 - Do I really have to replace the two gaskets?

2 - Can't I reuse them?

3 - What do I plug the caliper and inlet fitting with and why?

4 - Since I'm replacing them, shouldn’t I want to release all the fluid once the inlet is removed?

5 - Should I be clamping off the hoses?

Appreciate any help, tips or tricks…
1 - Yes, you HAVE TO replace the gaskets, they are usually copper washers and once they've been used, they must be replaced. Cost = $0.50 each.

2 - No, not if you don't want any problems afterwards.

3 - Usually you would plug both ends with plastics caps made for such things, as you won't have these, just do the caliper swap right away, start and finish 1 side befor moving to the other.

4 - I can't say for sure, but if were me, I'd do the job trying not to loose too much fluid and then after you can do a bleed procedure to flush out the old fluid and replace it with the new stuff.

5 - Certainly NOT, these are not regular rubber hoses, they are designed for high pressure applications, clamping them will damage them and cause you a failure that you don't ever want to have.

Good Luck! :)

Thanks Steve for all the info and advice... I'll go and pick up some new gaskets... if my local dealer doesn't have them, do you think the home depot stuff will do?

No, Home Depot won't have em. Try any automotive store, Pep Boys, Advantage Auto, or even better a GM parts counter to make sure you get the right parts.

The old gaskets can be reused if you are in a pinch, say late at night with not a new one in sight. You just need to sand them flat again (very fine grit sandpaper will do the job well) and dress down any rough inner/outer edges. Clean them well afterward. Works well for the desparate or excessively cheap. :D

I can see desparate for a short time, but "excessively cheap" and brakes do not belong in the same sentence. Especially, if you are following behind me. :lolg:

As long as they are thick enough to crush properly, it's no big deal. The biggest issue would be ensuring they are clean and that you don't introduce debris into the line.

I used to work with a fellow who would top off his brake fluid at least twice a week. He was a good guy, I miss working with him.

Now, that is scarry.... But I also knew a guy who didn't know you had to pump the brakes after replacing pads. Bad thing is he wrecked the back of his car; good thing no one was hurt, except for a giant pine tree at the end of his driveway. :lolg:
