My dad noticed a squeaking noise from the engine and thought it may be an alternator bearing going bad. He checked and found that the tensioner pulley was making noise and that the belt had slipped two to three ribs over on the crank pulley. He readjusted the belt but, once he started it, it slipped again. Anyone have an idea what could be causing the belt to move?
Sounds like one of the pulleys is mis-aligned. Some people have had the crank pulley/damper come loose and "wobble", but it should be visibly out of line.
Regardless, you should have it looked at before you loose the belt.
I had the same thing happen. The belt walked all the way off! Replaced the belt tensioner pulley assy and belt and the problem went away. This is a common GM problem. :mad
When the belt is on the crank, it is slightly off center on the guide pulley attached to the block. When the car is started, it moves 2 ribs off the crank pulley and is then centered on all other pulleys. That's why I'm thinking it may be the harmonic balancer. Looks like a dealer deal cause the crank requires a special puller it looks like.

Was this noise anytime the engine is running or just under Load? Mine just started to make some belt noise, but only when you put a load on the engine, when it's in neutral it's slient.
It's was after initial start-up. Turns out the harmonic balancer was bad and the tensioner was slightly bent. Dealer charge---750 bucks. Big rip-off since most of the items they charged for were marked up 50%. But this is a deal for another thread.
