My 01 vette is burning oil at the rate of 1.25qts per 600 miles. GM and the dealership want to replace the 2nd ring on the pistons. I have a terrible feeling once they take the body off the frame, remove the enigine, fix it and put it all back together, it will never be the same. The car has 8K miles on it.
Has anyone has this repair done? If so, what were the result?
I'm looking for advice on how to handle this problem. Any help would be appreciated
Go ahead and let them do it. My dealer (Tom Jumper) did the same to my 2001 coupe last January. There have been NO problems. My oil consumption went to almost nothing and my exhaust tips stay clean longer...
Bill, listen to Sidestep. He may be a generally unreliable joker, but he knows what he's talking about where oil-consumption is concerned. His beast was running quite nicely when I was trying to keep up with him last Saturday. :jester
Seriously, that's a lot of oil to be burning. Get it fixed by your most trusted dealer/tech. I've yet to hear about a negative experienced relating to the re-ring procedure.
I recommend getting it done. They don't have to remove the body off the frame and some dealers , such as mine, don't pull the motor completely. I had mine done last October and have been happy ever since. I would suggest taking it to a dealer that has performed this fix already and avoid being a test vehicle for a new mechanic. Good luck!
Get the repair done. I was the second 01 my dealership did & they did a great job.
I went from a quart about every 800 miles to a quart every 3000-3500.
I would think most dealerships have done a few of these by now.
Guess I'm lucky with my 01. It's a very early (11/00) 01 and it uses about 1/2 qt - 1 qt in 3000 - 4000 miles. I don't drive it hard but not real easy either.
