I am considering 3.90's. Any thoughts about the differences between 3.90 and 4.10?
I'd go with the 4.10's.
The pro's are that they are a kick in the pants to drive, give more thrust, make you feel faster, are easier on the starts from stops, and provide some useable power in 6th gear. Actually, you will probably find that you need to shift less at highway speeds, such as when going up a hill, where before you would have to shift down to 5th.
The cons, if you want to consider them that, are about 6% less gas mileage, lower top end in all gears (except maybe 6th), and more shifting.
If I get a new Corvette, gears will be one of my first mods...for sure.
Cons: all of the above + tire replacement
get 4.10's not 3.90's
with upper 400's RWHP your 6th gear then becomes the top speed gear
Neptune bill did 195 in sixth(would have broken 200 but he let off it after beating the turbo 911) and he had 3.90's....6th gear isnt as tall since the final drive ratio is changed.
I will have my 4.10s For Sale. I'm changing gears again. This is the complete carrier. It has low mileage. This was built by Crash 94, a forum member.
I will take $1000 plus shipping.
My gas mileage actaully went up! With the stock 3.42's, I'd average about 19 MPG on the DIC. Since I got the 4.10's, I average over 20 MPG on the DIC (8 months worth of driving). It's weird because I go full throttle a lot more now that I have gears, but I guess the MPG went up because I spend more time in 5th gear driving around town.
I'm usually not afread of doing any mod myself. In my younger and dumber days I was a pony guy and even went into the AT, which crapped out a few months later. I have decided that when it comes to transmissions and rear ends, leave it to the pro's. Mistakes here are costly!

For those interested, you can't beat that price. And Crashed94 built mine too- Keep in mind you can re-sell your 3.42 carrier for $400 to $500 depending on mileage and condition. Install should cost you about $400 or so. After reselling your old gears, you should be right around $1000 +/- .
I've seen complete 4.10 carriers go for as much as $2000- uninstalled (without a core charge). Dynotech just ran a group purchase- take a look for that thread for their pricing. Also, East Coast Supercharging has good pricing-
Is there just a seat of the pants difference, or is the car actually faster? If there are really no downsides, why didn't GM do this from the start?
Will the 3.42 carrier from a MN6 fit on an auto?
Seat of the pants is huge.
The car is faster. Not a HP increase, but if you ever dyno your car, you will see that you make the most HP and Torque between 4K and redline. With lower gearing, your shifts at WOT bring you into the higher part of the HP curve, so essentially, you are getting more effective use of your HP.
The 3.42 does fit in an auto. If you have a 3.15, I don't think you need to reprogram the PCM. (I could be wrong though).
Not entirely sure why GM didn't put the 4.10 in the C5. I think gas mileage has something to do with it.
