I've looked at some of the tips on how to do this, but will I need some type of gasket sealent for where the top shifter meets the borrom? Any additional hints...?
Re: Installing Short Shifter. Any Hints? (MiamiDave)
I used no sealant when I installed my B&M. It is an easy install. The only tips I have are not to throw away or tear up any of the stock pieces because the instructions might call for them. Be gentle and patient when reinstalling the console and dash pieces and don't forget that "one important piece" and have to take everything back apart to stick it in there. Good luck and fast shifting.
If you have the stock shift ****, the pin holding it in can be a pain to get out. There is a member on the forum that has a tool designed for taking them out that works really well. Might be something to check out
Re: Installing Short Shifter. Any Hints? (Patches)
There is a plastic (nylon?) "cup" that you have to take off the ball of the stock shifter and put on the new one. DO NOT BREAK OR LOSE IT. You can only buy a new one as part of an entire new shifter assembly.
The install is pretty straight forward. I can do the entire job, including getting out and putting away tools in about 45 minutes.

I'd put a piece of cloth or something around the shifting unit when working on it so that you don't drop and lose any parts. I actually tore up a small towel and ended up leaving it there to dampen some of the noise...and it did. Be sure to loctite any bolts that you don't want coming loose.

In addition to everything mentioned about cut a tennis ball in half and open a small hole in it's top. Then slide it over the lever and snug it up at the base. Should fit inside the factory rubber insulator nice and snug. This will eliminate most of the noise that makes it up through the opening. My VetteEssentials short boot fits right over it. Can't tell it's there.
Re: Installing Short Shifter. Any Hints? (MiamiDave)
No, it doesn't look stupid, maybe just not quite as tidy to some. It comes down to personal preference. Here's mine with the Hurst. The short boot was $45 with shipping from Ken King at Vette Essentials.
Re: Installing Short Shifter. Any Hints? (MiamiDave)
MiamiDave, if you're going for a short shift boot and an aftermarket shift ****, then you don't have to remove the stock ****. That might save you a lot of hassle, since that retainer pin ("demon key") can be a real PITA to get out. :steering:
Re: Installing Short Shifter. Any Hints? (AFVETTE)
Good tip. After installing my Kirban, I ended up adding a full sheet of extra insulation under the console and built a small cup around the stick.
Tennisball would have been a timesaver. :banghead:
Maybe next time.
Thanks,
Nimo :steering:

I was going to install mine this weekend, but was hoping I could do it by only removing the shifter boot. Darn, now this sounds llike more work. :conehead
