Some of you may remember my post about the CARTEK clutch explosion, well now it's time to start putting the car back together. I want your opinions on what clutch I should put back in the car. CARTEK has sent me a brand new clutch, pressure plate and flywheel, should I use that or would you advise on buying a different clutch and if so which brand? Thanks in advance for your advice, Bob
I can not speak for the Cartek Clutch since I have never run one.
I can give good feedback on the Mcleod Dual disk setup I currently have in my car with the Kevlar Disks as an option. This was a custom unit spec'ed by Carmen and built by McLeod to hold 1000RWHP.
So Far So good. This thing really holds!! Not to bad on the noise either.
I think you should stick with the Cartek unit. You are one of few who have actually experienced the Cartek unit exploding and I think what most people do not notice is that Clutches in drag cars have been exploding for years and will continue to explode for years to come. I mean we've all bought products whether they be a car clutch or a TV remote control that have been defective or have broken. I mean would you sell your car because the battery went dead after a few years or just buy a new one? Just my 2 cents.

:iagree: I used the Mcleod in past and loved it.
Good Luck
Your not completely safe from a clutch explosion with a Mcleod either. There where a couple that let go on f-bods in the past. That stuff happens. It's part of racing. That's why they make scatter shields.
I know there is someone making a scatter shield for the vettes now. I have the link at work. I'll post it tomorrow.
They are rare, and not always posted about. I'm sure there are far more that have happened with other types of clutches, but just haven't heard about.
I'm not trying to knock anyone's choice on the clutch they use or recommend. Just pointing out a few things.

WOT, I would be very interested in that link to a scattershield, when I first posted about the clutch explosion a lot of people posted that there was not a scattershiel avail. for the C5. Trust if there is one out there I will be buying one as I never want this to happen again. Bob
I would try:
Fidanza Flywheel
Ram 3000lb PP
Ram 980 dual surface disc
Will have good streetability, be nitrous friendly, inexpensive, and able to hold 700rwtq.

I have been running a McLeod Street Twin this year with my turbo setup. It holds the power with NO problems. It made a chirpping sound for the first 200 miles during hard launches, but it feels great after 500+ miles.
My RAM 910 VDS clutch system has been holding up great. It is a bit chattery for slow takeoffs during street driving, but once you figure out how to let the pedal up, and how much gas to give it, you will get it taking off good and smooth.
After a Z06 clutch and two cartek clutches, this is my best setup yet... I hope it continues to be too!!

Talk to Mike at RAM. A 900 series VDS system sounds like a good fit for the HP you have. His number is 800-845-2383. ( Mike drives a red 99 FRC )
:iagree:
To recap and clarify, they make 2 different 900 series discs. They make a 910 if I am correct which uses sintered iron on both sides and a 980 which uses sintered iron on the PP and organic/kevlar mix on the flywheel side. the 980 is more streetable but the 910 holds slightly more power.

Hi Bob. Sorry to hear about the clutch. BTW I'm the guy with the Pewter coupe with the Z06 rims that ran in the auto-x in Chariton with you and talked with you about Cerra in Indianola. From what I've read the McCleod setup, although pricey, seems to hold up very well and doesn't feel a whole lot different than stock. Also when I was at Cerra this last weekend Mike had a new clutch setup that I hadn't heard of. I can't remember the name, but he said it was pretty strong and completely rebuildable. May want to get a hold of him and see what the story is there. Good luck with the clutch. Doesn't sound like you'll be at the show this Saturday in Altoona.
Joel, I've seen the clutch at CERRA but don't know much about it, if all goes well I will be at the show on Saturday. Of course I won't be in my car but I have put my hands on a low mile 80' L-82 and thats what I will be driving. After all how would it look if the president of the club didn't show up with a CORVETTE to win the largest club partcipation prize. Bob
