Many people have done this by buying a projector and Instrument cluster that is HUD enabled. Or if you have a 99 or newer, your instrument cluster should be HUD enable. Key words are "should be".
My 99 was NOT HUD enabled. I have an early 99 so maybe I got some of the left over 98 clusters?
But I bought a HUD projector at corvette swap meet for $200. Then I bought the HUD controller at a dealership for $60. Got the HUD bezel for $15 also at a dealership. Gene at the Karshop in FL. was nice enough to send me the all illusive 12 pin connector that you need to attach the HUD controls to the IC for FREE! ( I just had to wire it up, which was a nightmare)
As I mentioned my 99 IC was not HUD enabled. Instead of buying a entire new cluster or used one. I took my cluster apart and figured out that you really only need the circuit board in the back that everything plugs into. I called up Gene again and asked if he had any damaged clusters that still had a good circuit board. He did, so I got a new circuit board for $20 along with a trashed IC out of a Z06. Unfortunately the tach gauge was damaged because I thought I might be able to transfer the gauge faces to my IC. But after pulling the circuit board out of the damaged IC and installed it in my existing IC. Everything worked fine, I even got the mileage of the now poor deceased Z06 of 9575 miles. Of course I'll be getting this fixed ASAP.
The only hard part was making the wiring harness from the circuit board to the HUD controls. A non enabled cluster has a 12pin connector going to a 7 pin connector. You need a 12pin to 12pin for the new HUD controls. I found a couple of examples how to wire this but they were wrong. I was luckily enough to get my buddy Richard to bring his 2000 C5 over and let me pull his IC out of his car so we could examine the wiring harness.
Here is what we found: (looking at Top of cluster)
HUD Control Side: Circuit board Side:
Pin 1 -> Pin 12 (both empty)
Pin 2 -> Pin 10
Pin 3 -> Pin 11
Pin 4 -> Pin 8
Pin 5 -> Pin 9
Pin 6 -> Pin 5
Pin 7 -> Pin 6
Pin 8 -> Pin 1
Pin 9 -> Pin 7
Pin 10 -> Pin 4
Pin 11 -> Pin 3
Pin 12 -> Pin 2
After cutting a hole in my existing dash using the bezel as a template, I now have a fully function HUD setup.
Total cost $295 in parts. If you have a 2000 or newer car you only need the projector, HUD controls, bezel and wiring harness.
Most 99's should also only need the same but mine didn't so just beware if you have an early production 99.
A Big thanks to Gene at Karshop and Richard Thomas for letting me pull his car apart.
