In the UK, it's hard enough to get a Vette, and even harder to get hold of a manual vette, so I ended up with an auto.
Now, whilst I don't mind the auto, I think I'd feel in greater control if I had a manual - so first question: How difficult is it to convert an auto to a manual?
Second question: I assume that converting an auto to a manual will be big $$$, so what can I do to improve the speed of the shift on the auto?
Third Question: Is there any way with my Auto that I can safely shift up and down the manual gears without breaking the transmission?
Well, form experience I can tell you it's not very hard to convert to a manual. Karshop was selling a complete kit for 3g's. But, I pieced mine together for about $1500 form ebay mostly. I converted mine in a weekend on a rack.
So - been reading old posts about the auto transmission....
How do I tell what rear end I've got? The spec of the car says "Performance rear axle" is that anything to do with it?
With the Transgo kit, is there a "home made and easy" way to disable the torque programming - we have NOBODY in the UK to do any vette specific stuff - I'm on my own!
If the Transgo kit and the reprogramming is done, will I be OK to use the automatic shifter like a manual without breaking it up while downshifting?
I can't address the tranny swap except to say that is going to be a lot of work and parts.
The performance rear axle is 290. Base is 273 (please correct me).
My A4 has 45K on it and I shift it like an manual matic.
Downshifting I blip the throttle. Into first I heavily blip.
Also I have torque control still intact and no mods to the trans.
Upshifting 1st to 2nd is instantaneous (I let up a little on the throttle), but 2nd to 3rd has a delay. So I stay on the gas a second after that shift then let up as I try to match rpms.
My recommendation is to change the tranny fluid and filter every 15K miles (referring to the C4 maintenance schedule and Firebird - which is the same trans). Flush it at 30K mileage at a shop equipped to do so). Just keep the oil fresh.
Then I'd say you have no problem with your A4.
Lastly an aftermarket tranny cooler install would never hurt.
IMO you only need to reprogram the PCM and adjust the Torque Management. Which retards timing before a shift, killing power. My car feels completely different after having Ed Wright at Fastchip reprogram the PCM. The shift from 1st to 2nd is wicked and will cause the back end of the car to jerk sideways under WOT! I would try it before considering a trans swap. Good Luck! The performance gear in my 98 A4 car is a 3.15

It depends on the year. For 2000 the base axle is a 273:1 and the performance is a 315:1. All manuals come with a 342:1 -no performance option for manuals. You can tell what axle you have by looking at the codes on the inside of the glovebox door. The 273:1 rearend is coded GU2. The performance rearend is coded G92.
I did a search for corvette specs and got the information on the codes of the web.

No cutting of the body. Oh, wait you have to knock out the hole for the pedal to go through the firewall. The outline is already there though. It takes about 3 seconds to do it. The pedal mounts are already there to. It just goes to shows these cars were meant to be sticks to begin with.
So what parts would I need to convert the car to a stick shift?
As for the Transco thing - I'm a little confused now - what gearing do I have (1997 with Perf rear axle) and do I need the torque management disabled? If so, what do I need to buy to do that? So many opinions!! :D
You need trans, torque tube, bellhousing, flywheel, clutch, clutch master, pedal assy, trans wiring harness, shifter, shifter rod, pcm or reflash of your own, fuel filter (do it while its easy access), muscle relaxers to wipe the smile off your face when you fire it up for the next 3 months. :D If I think of anything else I'll post. Get ahold of "karshop" he is awesome to deal with. Good prices to. :steering:
I'm telling you straight up, with just the Torque Management adjustment the car will respond! You should really consider this IMO before you go through the trouble of shift kit or trans replacement. The good thing is the price for reprogram and the fact you don't even need to get under the car. Contact Ed Wright at http://www.fastchip.com for details on shipping your PCM for reporogram and I know he ships outside the country. Try it, you won't be disappointed! :yesnod:
