With the excitment of getting my new wheels on I didn't pay attention when I bought new locking lug nuts. I accidently used standard instead of metric lug nuts on 4 of the 5 bolts.
So im in kinda of a jam, I want to try and use a die to re-tread it but im unsure as to what size I need (12x1.5 or a size up or down?). Or should I just have it hauled to a dealer and get them to re-tread it, or do I have to have the hub/bolts changed out?
Also, is it still safe to drive? I don't want my new wheels to fly off while im driving. I only removed 1 wheel to see the condition of the treads. The other 3 feel securely snuged. But with standard nuts on a metric bolt, how really 'secure' are they??
Discount tires ruined couple bolts on my old car before and when replacing my brakes, I found it ... It is very simple to replace. Go to dealer and buy new bolts, knock the old one's out and just use couple good lugs to tight them all back. If they are from dealer, they will easy to go on.
Keep checking the torque on the lugs for the first couple driving days.
Good luck!
They are 12mm x 1.5
If you buy a die and run it over the studs it will at least allow you to take it to the dealer or tire shop to have the studs replaced. I would not recommend using a die to re-thread the studs as a permanent fix. They are not hard to replace at all.
I am also concerned that you did not notice this as you were threading them on. I always thread each nut on by hand until it is seated on the wheel, then I tighten them down in a star pattern. I hope you only did this on (1) wheel.
