Default 4.10 Gears....

Anyone got these installed?

What difference will these make to my ride overall? I realise it'll be quite a bit quicker, but will they cause me reliability issues, or make my car unusable on the street? Or perhaps rubbish over long distances?

Please chime in with the pros and cons of this setup!

Thanks!

Honestly, I can't list any downside to my 4.10's except maybe that my mileage has suffered because they make the car so much more fun to drive. The change in the car is truly satisfying. It complements my h/c setup nicely although they'd work equally well on a stock C5.

I've heard others' concerns with streetability of these gears on a C5 and it's totally unfounded. A friend drove mine this weekend and agreed with me tot he point that he is planning the same upgrade on his header/intake/exhaust C5. The car is easily driven moderately on the street. As far as the highway - 6 gear is actually now usable.

I'd like to know also as my 3.42 Z06 (shot-peened) diff. that I bought from LAPD six months ago just crapped out. Thinking about potentially upgrading to a 3.73 or 4.10 but my A4 is a daily driver in Washington, DC traffic and want to know how these will gears will feel.

Thanks! :auto:

So will it work with an A4 (Chuck's Stage IV tranny) and a Yank SY3500?

Uh-oh! I've got an A4 - does this mean I can't use the 4.10?

MPG is important over here (petrol is about $6.40 a gallon) - what difference do these gears make to the MPG in town traffic?

Also, you say "it's easy" to drive this just cruising around, whereas at the moment, I don't even have to think about it - do you mean that it is a little harder to keep control of the car with these gears?

Do they affect anything else? Emissions of the car etc?

Thanks!

I believe there is one member here with 4.10's in an A4 but most are running either 3.42's or 3.73's and a couple have 3.90's.

4.10's are best suited to the MN6-equipped C5.

An ultra-low gearset like the 4.10's lends itself to a manual tranny application rather than the auto. Look at the gear ratios for the MN6/12 and A4, factor in the shift points and TC and you'll conclude that a higher gear is more appropriate for your A4. Tuning can become tricky at such low ratios.

Consider your A4 gear ratios . . .

FIRST 3.06
SECOND 1.63
THIRD 1.00
O/D 0.70
REVERSE 2.29

. . . and the MN6/MN12 ratios

FIRST 2.66 / 2.97
SECOND 1.78 / 2.07
THIRD 1.30 / 1.43
FOURTH 1.00 / 1.00
FIFTH 0.74 / 0.84
SIXTH 0.50 / 0.57
REVERSE 2.90 / 3.28

Your O/D at 0.70 doesn't even match my MN6's 0.74 fifth gear. If I remember correctly, in 6th gear at 70, I'm at ~1800 rpm with my 4.10's. Imagine where the 4.10's would put you in O/D at 70mph and what that would do to your gas mileage, your engine longevity and your enjoyment of highway cruising.

Hmmm... So it would appear that the 4.10 gears ain't a good idea until I ditch the A4, huh?

Are there any gears I could buy to give me better performance until I can find someone to do a transmission swap for me?

Thanks!

Well, yeah! As I said above, A4's respond very well to 3.42's and 3.73's. 3.42's tend to be the most popular because you can buy a used 3.42 gearbox for ~$500 versus more than 3X that for the lower ratios.

Even a new 3.42 gearbox can be had for $850 (I believe one of our vendors has these on sale right now).

Bottom line: any upgrade you do from 3.15's and, especially from 2.73, to a lower gearset will give you a satisfying kick in the pants.

Thanks for the info - $850 seems expensive as people are selling gear kits on here for $250 - do I need to buy the full gear-box?

Sorry for being such a dolt with this! :D

Yes you can get the gear sets for $250 but then you have to get them installed. Which is not the easiest thing to do yourself. Plus they basically rebuild your differential if done correctly. So if you you want to go with a 3:42 you might as well buy a new unit. Then you know everything is new. Then you can sell your current diff and get some of the money back.

If you saw the procedure necessary to install and align the gears (18 page procedure from GM according to C-5 Tech, a GM tech and vendor on this forum) you'd understand why the gears are cheap and the labor ain't. Also, finding a shop trained and competent enough to do this for you is a crapshoot.

Buy either a new set, a used set that you know for sure is in excellent condition or have a pro shop like DTE rebuild a core for you like I did. You can use your's as a core if you're willing to have the car sit while the box is rebuilt (which may not be feasible for you Brits).

I bought a 3.15 core in excellent shape from a forum member and had DTE rebuild it. My almost new (3500 miles) 3.42 gear box that was pulled off my 2002 to make way for the 4.10 box is going in my buddy's '99 A4 very soon. Overall, buying a core is a wash for me so I only ended up paying for the upgrade, shipping and labor for install.

I resold my 3.42s and that covered the price of my install, plus a little extra. I made out a little better than re-using my own carrier.
