Default [help] Reading a dyno graph

Why do some HP/torque lines trace smoothly and others have ups and downs?

:lurk: You're not the only one to wonder why some dyno sheets seem to be suffering from Parkinson's disease. Perhaps there's some optional software to smooth out the graph that not all dyno owners have bought/use ?

If you download the software from www,dynojet.com, you can see the effects of the smoothing function they have. It makes wiggly lines smoother. However, with software I am familiar with in my work, the use of this function can lead to misleading results! In other words, you can smooth out "real" problems making them look to be no problem. Now, no one would do that would they?

Does the "smoothing function software" mask engine problems? If those little dips and humps mean something, I'd want to see them there.

I have only used the smoothing function to make the graph look a litttle "cleaner". I doubt the HP/TQ moves as much as some of the plots indicate (unless there is a real problem like a suck-out due to KR, etc.). The small wiggles may just be the machines inherent accuracy being displayed.

I know that you can take the smoothing out of some plots and actually pick up a little HP where the peaks were previously hiddened (smoothed)! Of course, that is dirty pool!

I am not an expert on the data that is displayed from the dyno, but I do know you can play tricks with just about any data and have any smoothness you want. I have seen this done many times over the years.

Is there anyway to know this vs. a glitch in your engine?

I heard that you can also get false HP/TQ numbers by loading the computer with a different vehicle weight.

You may want to ask some of the tuners on specific questions of the data output. I am just guessing from my experience on data plotting software I have used here in the RF/microwave industry.
