I've been kinda sorta tinkering with the idea of having my 2000 Coupe upgraded by having a performance shop install a slightly upgraded heads / cam. A H/C package similar to a Z06. I'm not looking for a mid 11 second car. I would like my car to appear very stock as far as ride and idle. Perhaps Z06 heads and a cam marginally larger than a stock Z06. I figure (please correct me if my calculations are incorrect) with LS6 H/C in addition to my existing mods I should be around 360rwhp. I have been browsing the various 'Supporting Vendor' web site for information and prices on various H/C packages. The consensus is that the H/C packages are roughly $6-10K. Why soo much? I priced LS6 heads at around $1200 and cams seem to be $399 everywhere you go. So the H/C would be $1600.00. I would need to have the H/C installed as I am *not* a DIYer. Is installation $4K? Am I missing something here ? How much should I expect to pay for parts and installation for the above style H/C? One final question, how much of a discount could/should be expected if you wait until winter to have work done on your car? I would think the prices would be reduced during the winter months.
Thanks again to everyone who has been patient and helpful with all of my questions.
:iagree: heads and cam should be cheaper, i would just buy a cam package for around 700 inclu. everything and buy some heads around 1200 to 1500 and find a good tuner to install........... :yesnod: 6k to 8k .. :bs
If you are trying to get 360 rwhp don't waste your money on heads. You can get that with a cam only and probably stay pretty close to stock idle with the right tuning. Doing heads/cam to get only slightly better numbers than a stock z06 is a waste of $
6-10 k for a head and cam pkg is way too high. I am currently doing this to my 02' Z06 and it's cost is ruffly $1300 for head porting w/ comp springs and larger valves plus re-surfacing and assembly. $400 for the cam, $350 for all new head bolt's and gasket's push rods and timing chain.$350 for computer tuning and $500 for partial installation for a total of $2550. A average mechanic should only charge you about $1000 for a install so your total your should be ruffly 3k max. I pulled off the heads and exhaust myself (very easy to do) and I had a local shop do the cam swap for $500.
3K sounds much better than 6-10. $6-10K is what I was finding on many of the performance web sites. The 6-10 packages are probably more aggressive than I want. I would be happy with 360-400 rwhp provided it can be done without sacrificing the drivability of the car.

:iagree: I just did a 224/224 cam in mine and got 358.3 RWHP and 358.8 TQ. No heads but I do have other mods. Go with the 224/224 cam.... you'll love it
Thank-you everyone for the info and patience with all of my questions. I am still reading up on the various cam specs. At this point it would appear that a 224 or similar cam while keeping my stock heads would achieve my performance goals. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
I'm in the exact same boat and did the research.
I'm going with the MTI T1 cam
seems to be VERY popular here......and you can run it pretty much stock and still be 100% streetable.....i researched alot to come to that conclusion..
The MTI cam are great, and work well with stock heads. I just decided I didn't want a cam that made power so high. I friend had a TA with the T1 cam in it. He had some trouble with tuning issues, but it still pulled like crazy. It just didn't make power until 4500. It really pulled after that though.
i did not know that...is there a similar cam with comparable mid-range power ?!
gm hot cam?
I am not a cam expert, or a mechanic, and everything I know is just from reading.
There is all kinds of info to search for about cams, and most place you can buy them from will list where in the power band you will make your power.
Generally the higher duration cams 220 and above make their power pretty high, from what I have seen. What you need to do is base your choice on what you want your car to do, where you are going to drive it, and what other mods you plan on doing.
