The steering rack had to be removed to install the camshaft. If the steering wheel was rotated with the steering shaft disconnected, the steering position sensor on the column will be out of synch :yesnod: Otherwise, faulty steering position sensors are somewhat common...
When the steering link was disconnected the wheel was probably allowed to rotate and then not put back on in the correct position.
You need to center the wheels and disconnect the steering down at the gear box, then turn the steering wheel completely in one direction, now count how many revolutions it takes to turn the wheel in the other direction and then turn it half way back (you want to make sure that you get the wheel centered I.E. the same number of turns to the left as well as the right) now connect it back to the steering gear and your codes will not come back

That wont work...With the steering disconnected, you can turn the wheel in either direction until eternity ;) The easiest way is to hook up the TECH2 and monitor steering position sensor voltage. When the steering wheel is centered and the wheels straight, the steering position sensor should read 2.5 volts. If it does not, than the column shaft was hooked up 180,360,540,720,etc out of snych :yesnod: Or of course, the sensor is faulty...

I must have a one off car then, because when I put my Magnuson in, I thought that the wheel would lock with the ignition off and when I went to reconnect my steering linkage I found that the wheel did rotate (then I found out thats why the 03 autos don't have column lock problems), so I turned my steering wheel until it stopped, and it did stop. It was almost a year ago, but I think I got 3 or 3 1/2 turns, something like that.
I did have a cam put in, so I think we are right so far on that as to HOW it happened. Now, any and all details to fix it would be a great help. How to I re-center it?
Any other advice? The dealer said its $400 to do it, plus $200 for a new sensor! So $600 for what!? Also, I don't have active handling, so what if anything does this do for my car? It drives fine, jus the annoying error.
I don't think the sensor is bad, it’s not a coincidence, just that the dealer finds this the easy way out. But lets just say I buy the sensor, or want to try re-aligning it, what do I do, is it simple? I have a mechanic friend, and he could help me out for much less if I can explain what it needs. Lets say it was put back out of align with a cam change, any steps one could list to fix it?
Tex,
I currently have the same problem. I was told by C4C5Specialist that I need a steering wheel sensor also. Fortunately, I have an extended warrenty to cover the work. I'm just waiting on an appointment. Check with C4C5Specialist on CAC forum. If anyone can give you the straight shoot he can.
Good luck.
First thing before you replace the sensor is to verify the ABS module harness is secure with the lever in the locked position. The ABS module is at the rear of my Vert near the differential. It was loose and the harness not fully seated. I replaced the sensor and still had a steering sensor uncorrelated malfunction, then I noticed that afternoon that the harness was not locked and secure. It has been over a month since the last SES light.
