I originally posted this in the General Discussion section, but it better suited here. Yes, I know this is a dupe.

The past few times I've fired up my car the external temp has read 60F and hasn't moved. Today it started at 60F then moved up to 81F (actual temp) then back down again within minutes.
I'm wondering how many people has experienced this problem and has it been fixed simply by replacing the sensor.
I found the sensor on GMPartsDirect.com for $4.03. :)
I know I should buy the manuals, but can anyone tell me where the sensor is located.
it is up in the radiator shroud, point into the fresh air ahead of the radiator. It is on the passenger side of the shroud. It is a little awkward to get to, but mechanically very easy to change.
This morning my dealer replaced the outside temp sensor under warrenty. It could be 90* outside yet would show 51*, then maybe 76*, then 90*, back to 84*, etc. I won't really know if it's fixed for several days.
I just had mine replaced under warranty, and this is the number from the dealer's work order: 10248414--$11.28.
I was certain I had a head unit problem, as I pulled/cleaned/tested the thermistor/connector contacts and checked voltage with a high quality VOM as per other posts seen for this issue. The thermistor varied with temp changes, and voltage readings did not match what the posts stated they should be with the sensor disconnected. Took it to the dealer expecting the worst--turns out it was indeed the sensor only. Go figure. I'm going to keep one handy for the next time.
