Well, here's the story. I spoke to Lou at LGM and was going to get his RAM clutch, but he couldn't get it to me in time. It was at the dealer for the clutch install and they were waiting on parts from me so I got a Spec Stage II clutch and a Spec aluminum flywheel. Now, the clutch isn't disengaging fully and the pedal disengages much closer to the floor. Also, it's very hard to get into gears 1 - 6 and reverse is impossible unless the car is off. What is up? Anyone else experience this with this clutch? I don't know if it will get better with a little break-in or if I need an adjustable RAM master or is the flywheel needs to be spaced differently. :banghead:
With your mods I'm surprised they didn't put the stage III, mine has not slipped in 2 years, its a little clattery starting off and I have the sticking problems that are not associated with the clutch but probably the hydraulics that will be replaced shortly--sounds like your clutch is not mounted or adjusted properly---if not disengaging properly you will not be able to shift, I think its the setup and not the clutch---
I HAVE BEEN DOWN THIS ROAD BEFORE!!!
MY CAR DID THE SAME DAME THING AND IT ENDED UP BEING THAT WHEN THE CLUTCH WAS PUT IN, THE BOLTS THAT HOLD THE CLUTCH TO THE FLYWHEEL THEY DID NOT PUT LOCK TITE ON THE BOLTS AND THEY BACKED OUT!!! HAD IT REDONE AFTER CALLING SPEC AND HAVE NOT HAD A PROBLEM OUT OF IT SINCE.
Not sure about the SPEC II but the SPEC III has adjustment levers on the Pressure Plate. I would put my money on that being the problem. Make sure the levers are set to the mark that comes from spec. Usually a red mark. You can remove the inspection plate and rotate the engine until you see one of the levers. If you move one you will move them all at the same time. Take a big screwdriver and a hammer and one person get in the car and the other adjust the lever with the screwdriver(hitting it with a hammer slightly). You will immediately feel the clutch change dramatically.
You can see the three levers in this pic with the red marks. Click to see a larger pic...
Yes Sir" same thing .It would not go in to gear and if it did it was hard to shift to the next one or the car would stumble :mad but all is good now :D
The stage II doesn't have the adjustable stuff. I went with the Stage II as a compromise so that I wouldn't have chatter. I don't drag the car anymore.
Did you change hydraulics? If you were having problems before the install, then you should have installed a new master and slave with the new clutch. That's what I did with my stage II and aluminum flywheel, no problems whatsoever, even with hard launches on 315 wide BFG drag radials!
Good luck in finding the problem, it's probably not the clutch itself. :seeya
Hydrolics weren't a problem before install. The only problem I had before install was that I had smoked the clutch on a downshift from 6th to 5th under full throttle and thereafter was smelling the clutch so I decided to replace it before going on a long trip next week. I figured that since they were going in there, I would upgrade the clutch and flywheel. The Spec instructions indicated upgrading the hydrolics for some cars, but they said that my '02 already had the upgraded hydrolics and therefore didn't change anything there. I'm taking it back this morning. I asked the tech to put the spacer in and also use lock tight on the PP bolts and also bleed the entire system. He didn't use the spacer because Spec said that it wasn't needed, but Lou at LGM said that the spacer is needed. I don't know who is right. The tech also didn't use lock tight because he said the service manual didn't call for it nor does the manual call for bleeding the system.
Well, I'd get him to bleed the system, as a minimum. If he had to take apart ANY PART of the hydraulic system, there's a good chance of air getting in. That would account for the problem. Hope that's all it is.
I just installed the Stage III clutch/pp/aluminum flywheel and have no issues with it so far. I used a new Z06 slave and master and bled it to death to make sure I had no air. I didn't use any spacers, I did use lock tite though.
