5 days into engine combo everyone said wouldn't work.....
Well, I have roughly 5 days of driving on my new engine combo that alot of people said wouldn't work. Many people said that my new combo would not be streetable on pump gas but its clear now that it is. Here is the combo:
1 part TEA/GTP Stage 5.3 stage 2+ heads 56cc chambers
1 part Comp Cams XER 232/238 110lsa straight up
1 part LG Pro long tubes
Compression Ratio: 12.3:1
Efficiency: 71-72%
Water temps: 175
The combo is soo sick its not funny. Before the car felt like it couldn't breathe but now it inhales air like there is no tomorrow. The RPM's shoot to a 7200 redline with ease in every gear. Before my 335s would have traction in 70 degree + heat where now they slightly spin but the instant acceleration feels like the tarmac is bunching up like a rug. When I initally fired the motor up I was worried about knock and even had backup headgaskets to lower the compression ratio in the event that 93 octane couldn't handle the high compression without detonating. Cracking into the throttle at part part throttle leaves definite kick in the seat that the past combo was lacking.
Advice to those looking for a great H & C combo:
1) Look at long term goals
2) Choose a cam that matches the flow characterics of your cylinder heads
3) Choose the compression ratio that matches your cam overlap/duration not what everyone else is running
4) Compression is very sensitive to cam selection, a 13.0:1 compression ratio can really be equalivent to 10:1 with a cam with a lot of overlap/intake closing point
5) Intake centerline on your cam can drastically change the effective compression. Choosing a cam with advance ground in will increase cylinder pressure where a cam with no advance will have less cylinder pressure.

Phillip,
I have a few questions. Did you keep the stock bottom end? Who did the tuning and what's the idle set at? and surging at low rpm? I am looking to push the envelope like you did but, I need it to be very streetable in the end.
thanks
When are you going to get this on a dyno and show us some numbers?

I have a forged bottom end but I think that a stock bottom end would work fine. In my situtation spraying a 100 shot ontop of a motor that probably makes 450rwhp forged internals is more durable than stock internals. I tuned the car and have idle set at 900 rpm's, some surging at low RPM's <1500 in first but fine everywhere else. I am trying to dyno it soon.

Nice work Phil, I always like to see someone push the envelope... I will be very interested in your dyno numbers AND your quarter mile (NA) performance numbers with this set-up.
I have a very similar engine going in a car now... 230/236 XE-R on 112 LSA, 112 ICL, Stg II LS6 heads, 11.5 CR, 3.905" forged pistons w/ valve relief's, stock crank . Not as wild as yours... A couple of questions please... What injectors are you using and do you have an LS1Edit file that you might share... What rods are you using and what is your shift point with a 7200 rpm rev limit? What are your valve sizes and what valve springs are you using with the 5.3 heads? Thanks and good luck...

but nothing shuts people up better than a nice low e.t. and high mph at the track!...
Trust me I've been there!! I'm very happy for you reaching YOUR goals..It must be a real sense of accomplishment knowing that you did this yourself and you believed in youself...Well Done!! :smash:
Now get me some vids..so I can make you famous!! :smash:

Shirl,
I am still running the stock injectors but I am really thinking hard about going to larger SVO's. I have at least 50 LS1 edit files I have tried and experimented with if you want to look at a couple. Eagle ESP H -beam Rods. Tenatively I am trying to shift at 7k...might move it up depending on dyno. The 5.3 heads are setup with shimmed Comp 987s which coil bind around .700 lift. Ferrea 2.02 and 1.57 tulip valves. Thanks!

Re: 5 days into engine combo everyone said wouldn't work..... (Phil97SVT)
Phil, try drilling a small hole in the center of your throttle body blade, this will let more air in at idle, and helps reduce the surging. That is pretty common with a cam like that, I have a huge hole in my blade, but it idles great @900 rpms. Congrats on your combo, good luck with it, look forward to seeing some track times!
