Can left side differential leak be intermittent?
I saw a couple drops of diff fluid on garage floor about 2-3 weeks ago. I cleaned the floor, jacked up the car, saw a bit of fluid dripping from the left side of the differential, but did not clean the differential so the mechanic could see the evidence. I haven't had a chance to take it in yet but...
The car has not leaked a single drop since, and I have driven it about 100- 150 miles after "leak" was discovered. I noticed that the vent on the differential is just above the left side where it "leaked". Is it possible that the differential is not really leaking? just lost some fluid out of the vent? I do subject the car to high G forces. Or is it a real leak that is going to come and go depending on how and how much I use the car?

I posted a similar topic last week and didn't get much response. I had the same drops of differential fluid on the garage floor and traced it back to the differential outlet valve, I had been driving in 104 temperature prior to the leak. Mine has not leaked again since and I am going to assume some fluid came out of the outlet valve because of the high temperature.
Maybe we can a response that confirms this as possible overflow situation.

Mine only leaks if I've had it out on the highway, Normal driving around town even all day or short trips it does not leak :confused: :confused: :confused:

Mine leaks a drop or two after a long (more than 150miles) freeway trip but never leaks after short trips around town. I have heard that there is a new gasket from GM for this problem. Talked to the service manager at the dealer and he thought that the wheel and short shaft had to be removed to replace the gasket. This sounds like a great opportunity to damage the "O" rings sealing the short shaft. :cuss :cuss

Mine leaked a few drops. I checked the fluid level and it was a few ounces overfilled. I cleaned the whole area, and nothing has leaked in almost 1 month. Its very possible that with spirited driving, hot temps and over-filled, that some could leak out the vent tube.
However, I do have 2 years left on my warranty. If I was nearing the end of the warranty, I would have taken it in for the repair. I'm still not convinced that mine is okay.

Hi all,
I have had mine leak only two times since I've had the car('July '98). They were both small amounts on my garage floor after a 300+ mile long trip to Cali on open highway at sustained high speeds.
