Here you go. The pics dont do the damage to the case any justice. The diff case is shattered and cracked in many places. Anyway, I'm a tad confused what is broke here. It looks to me as if the pinion gear shaft is broke, not the trans output shaft?? the shaft broke within the differential itself, so, I would consider that being the pinion shaft. ??
i'm waiting for Rodney to call me back. I hope this is not the trans output shaft. BTW, I did get the diff out without dropping the torq tube and trans. I tilted the drivetrain to the suggested angle limit, then I took the diff off at the 5 bolts. damn, the diff is crazy busted.
Robert,
<cringe> That is the transmission output shaft. Your going to need to repair that with either a new tranny or replace that shaft with a 300m one from Lingenfelter. 9 times out of 10 the output shaft for the differential are the one's that sheer off. I think the LPE shaft is 4-600 beans.

:iagree:
Those last couple of pics are of the broken output shaft
Robert,
That looks a lot like the one in this pic I saved from a post a while back...it's not mine.
I want more info on the case on the right.
Looks a lot stronger to me.
I had the same problem. The shaft is about 300 from GM and the install runs about 250.00 with the tranny out of the car....only about 20 minutes away with the differential out:)
BTW,
I have just a case if you need it....also you may want to take off the rear cover of the differential I am almost positive that it broke the pinion carrier also. If this is the case you will have to buy a new rear differential......
I have now seen 4 people have this exact same problem (including myself) and have yet to see a recent differential output shaft break!!!!!!!!!
I was racing a new BMW M3 coupe. I was doing about 75mph when i armed BOTH stages of the nitrous, then shifted to 3rd, popped clutch and punched it at same time when-- BANG!!!....the fruggin rear end let loose. fluid everywhere, on my exhaust, I was smoking and everything. It was really pretty cool!!!! I was already VERY far ahead of the beemer by that time, so, it was a successful kill.
I talked to Shirl Dickey of SDRE, who builds my motors for me and he suggests i may be able to replace my own trans output shaft. Maybe even while trans still in the car???? He's not so sure about that, but, I would LOVE to be able to do it while the trans is still in. Anyone?? BTW, I blame Shirl directly for the extent of this damage. His motor broke my car!!! Way too much power for the stock drivetrain....
Robert
The diff is obviously beyond repair. Rodney did call me back last night while i was asleep, so, I wll call him today to get squared away on needed parts.
Flyin-Brian- the case on left you picture is an 'A' case that housed the lower A4 gears (2.74) the case on the right is a 'B' case and houses the higher gears. I believe this is right....

If that IS the difference between the 2 series and 3 series cases, then you should switch to the case like the one on the right in that pic.
From your pic it looks like you had the weaker case, is that true?
