Default P1870 Transmission Component Slipping

Just got this error. I finished autocrossing and got on the interstate and got a check engine light. Cleared all codes got home and checked again and got the P1870.

Anybody have any experience with this. I just had 3.42 installed 1 1/2 weeks ago. I do have a vince High performance torque converter (2800 stall speed) which has been in for 2+ months.

I am wondering :
a) would it be safe to autocross again tommorrow
B) would this come up because of all the wheel spin I had going on at the autocross (just tripping the code)

The automatic transmission was acting kind of funny. It was rocketing in to the next gear even under gentle throttle. Stopped, filled up with gas, and now it is shifting normally. Is this temporary?

I want to drive tommorrow, but don't want to cause any damage. Any help would be appreciated.

From what I have read on the Forum...this is a common problem with the C5. When you change the gears (and especially when you change gears and converter) it throws off the computers mathematics when if calculates the tranny slip. Supposedly there are sensors ahead of and in back of the tranny that are used to measure how much slip there is in the transmission. I think it only pays attention to this when the car is cruising in "TC lock up" mode. The only way to stop the codes from occurring is to have a tuner that knows how to use ls1-edit software to adjust the transmission slip parameters.
I want to do this very change 3.42 + Yank 3500 converter. However, there are no tuners anywhere
near me with the ability to fix this very problem. so I am stuck. If anyone knows a shop near BHM alabama ... that can do this fix... let me know

You will have to have the pcm altered to correct the slippage code or this will happen again. When the pcm senses abnormal slippage it ups the line pressure to try and correct the situation and bring it back to normal. The risk factor is ruining a convertor or hurting transmission components while this is occurring. I toasted a yank while trying to drive mine. You can confirm the lockup function of the convertor, ( this is where the damage most likely occurs ) by having it scanned with a tech 2 upon reprograming.

Thanks for the info guys. I would have thought that if it needed to be reprogrammed that they would have done it since they also do tune, etc. I stopped when the check engine light came on, reset the codes, check engine light did not reappear so I drove the 1 1/2 hours home. I hope nothing else is toasted

Also dissappointed that I will miss the autocross tommorrow  But I did have a blast today :D

I would not adjust the slip test parameters. I would adjust the gear scaling. There's a Right Way and a Wrong Way to fix this. ;) If they didn't ask you to pay for programming, it probably wasn't done. If they didn't tell you it needed it, shame on them. :nono:

The only sensors involved are the CKP (engine speed) and VSS (on the diff). All the other intermediate values (many of which are ODB-II observables) are derived from these signals.

If you don't drive with the gear selector in 'D', the test doesn't run. If you do your events say in '2' (or even '3') you should be just fine and not at risk of being surprised by a code popping up at an unfortunate time. No reason to miss out on your fun as long as you can run with the selector in a position other than 'D' (i.e. you're not doing high speed stuff needing 4th.)

There are many threads on this topic both in this forum and Scan & Tune.
