P0430 TWC system
Anyone know what system this code is referring to? What is a TWC system? Something about low efficiency bank 1 and 2. ...
TWC - Three Way Converter Catalytic
P0430 is set when the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) determines the oxygen storage capability of the catalytic converter has degraded below a predetermined level. The PCM does this by monitoring the response time of the front and rear Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) as they transition from rich to lean and lean to rich conditions. If the delay time is too long as the front and rear sensors respond to rich to lean and lean to rich transitions, then the fault is set.
Can you see if the catalytic converters are damaged? (Dents/holes/severe discoloration) Does the exhaust system have leaks, damage, or loose/missing hardware? Are the electrical connections to the HO2S sensors secure and are the wires undamaged? Several things to check before replacing the converters themselves.
I believe P0430 refers to the passenger's side and P0420 refers to the driver's side converter. (P0420/P0430 share the same page of the service manual.)
You're running sims, right? The signal from them needs to have much less amplitude than from the "pre cat" sensor. (I *think* you'll see this if you have a fairly steady state voltage, even if it's not at the bias voltage but it's been a while since I last looked at this stuff.) This differential indicates that the cat is doing something. :) I think there's some criteria that requires some kind of minimum oscillation on the fronts so that a flatline on both front and rear isn't interpreted as a dead cat. (I.e. the rear signal is ambiguous and you also need the front to interpret correctly.) Easy enough to swap the sims between banks and see if the code for the other side throws.
Yes I am running no cats with O2 sims. I did have my car on for a long period of time while I was cleaning out the car. That was when I believe the code clicked the CE light. I can see what your saying about the lower cycling of the rear O2's. Thanks for the insight.
