Have any of you that run the Vararam changed the filter? If so, what filter did you use.........I've heard some people have used a K&N replacement but no one has been able to tell me a part #..........Vararam does not seem to list filters on its web site. What's up? :skep:
About a month ago someone posted the K&N part number of the vararam filter. I bought one through a local auto parts chain, it is the right size, but doesnt seal very well. I suspect they do some modifications to them before selling them, I would call Vararam and order it from them directly.
Have you seen the 'Green High Performance Air Filters' thread? I know that there is a K&N filter replacement for the Vararam, but like you I do not know the part umber. I am also curious about the Green High Performance filters. Yesterday I sent Green an email asking about a Vararam replacement. Hopefully I will get a reply. I will email Vararam today also.
Appreciate the info......I bought my Vette with the Vararam system in it......I am impressed with the performance, etc. I just find it a little confusing that the filter is like some big "mystery"..........I have a feeling that Vararam probably wants to sell only their "special" filter for some BIG price! :skep:
Again, a warning. If you do not buy it directly from VR, that part number does not seal properly. It needs something more around the edges or dirt will go around the filter.
I'm back to running the all foam race filter until I figure it out.
The whole sealing thing scares me with the VaraRam. The concept is sound-but until a higher quality element is available than the foam or the K&N-I'm sticking with my Donaldson.
Yeah, my filter sucks too! The first time I checked it, there was sand/dirt that seemed to have gotten past the filter. My filter was falling apart, so i used black RTV to re-attach the foam around the edges. I then sprayed the element with some K&N filter oil. I also used some marine moly grease to coat the edges of the filter where it sits in the airbox. The problem to me seems the filter is flimsy & has no structure. It sags, and the dirt gets past that way. I am currently searching for something better. As soon as you guys find a good replacement, let me know. SCOTT
Re: Vararam ...... Filter Change? (99 The Hard Way)
I agree Scott. The vararam's major downfall is that it doesnt have a molded foam rubber seal (think weatherstrip). Thats what the factory airbox has, along with every flat panel filter I've ever seen.
I talked to Patrick and he didn't recomend the K&N as a replacement filter. He recomended the new three layer foam filter(super sport filter?). It has three different layers of foam. Each layer of foam has different porosity making for better filtration and less pressure drop than the K&N.

Who makes the "3 layer foam filter?" Is that a Vararam product? Thanks.....
Can't buy that K&N filter off the shelf and have it fit properly. Vararam has to modify it to fit. I was not happy with their foam filter falling apart, so I got the modified K&N directly from Vararam. If I lost 2 horsepower by the switch, it's worth the peace of mind knowing my baby's properly filtered.

Yes that is a VaraRam product. I'm not sure if it's listed on their website either. It's $59 I believe.
I not paying $59 for a filter from vararam unless someone assure me its of a much higher quality than the filter that comes with the unit. The filter is a POS. A few pieces of foam hot glued together that fall apart after 1K miles.

Ted,
Shoot me a mail and let me see if I can help. 1,000 miles on a filter is abnormal and should be fixed. VR stands behind their stuff as well as any of my best suppliers.
RG- I'd also like some info on the new vararam filter. Mine did not last 3000 miles. I just don't want to buy another crappy filter. That seems sort of high, but I also have not seen the filter. SCOTT
