OK you tech guru's, what cam should I get? I want the nastiest cam that will still pass NY emissions. 2002 A4 coupe with Vararam, FLP longtubes/x-pipe/hi flow cats, Borla Stingers, 3.73 gears, 2900 hi stall torque converter. Don't plan on doing heads. Will of course have tuner redo LS1 edit.
Thanks guys, I think I'm there after reading that thread. But I wouldn't mind hearing anyone else's opinion. What about emissions and throwing any codes?
Grandsport, as a fellow New yorker I can tell you that the cams bigger than 224 duration will have a hard time passing N.Y.S. emissions. So that leaves out many of the monster cams you are hearing about like the G5X-2. I only have a 218/224 567/567 113 that passed but it was not by a really big margin. Secondly if you go too wild on your cam selection you will need to upgrade to a converter with more stall in the 3800-4400 range to get the most out of that cam. If I were you I would get the TR224 561/561 114 or I would give the Vettedoctors a call and ask them about installing the cam that forum member "Redgar" used to run 11.41 @ 122 MPH with stock heads. This cam is rather mild and should pass NYS emissions. Good Luck
Yes, Mitch C, after doing some more reading on the subject, I think the G5X-2 is out for us New Yorkers because of emissions. I still want a seat of the pants improvement, but can't have the car failing the sniffer. So maybe one of the milder cams from LG Motorsports, or the one from Thunder Racing you mention? I think I have to go with LSA of 114? The Vette Doctors are the ones who work on my car, I'm just doing a little independent research before I take the plunge. Anyone else from NY or CA care to comment on best performing cam that still passes emissions?
You are in good hands with the Vettedoctors, they also work on my car. When you say SOTP improvement just how much performance are you looking for? Most cams with 218 to 220 duration minimum will get you into the very low 12s to high 11s with the right converter and decent traction. You are on the right track a cam with a 114 lsa will give you good idle quality in an A4 and will make it easier to pass emissions.
"Seat of the pants" meaning I don't have to put it on a dyno to know I improved the car. Not interested in spending money and going into the engine for something that isn't going to be noticeable. So is this possible while still meeting NY emissions?

One thing you must realize, that everyone on this site is from a different part of the country or state with different rules and regulations. A lot of them from what I've read, don't seem to have a problem with having to retest to meet emissions requirements wherever they happen to live, but for the few of us who happen to live where there is strict mandatory re-testing every year or
every 2 years, it is far better to be on the safe side and be aware of what and how we modify our cars. Swapping out a cam and set of heads is not a
quick and easy task and do some research before your install. Nothing could be worse than installing a cam that won't meet emissions and that needs to be yanked out again. In my signature you will see a moderate cam only because out here in Calif. we have very strict standards we must adhere to because we have to pass a sniffer and or Dyno run every 2 years and when changing ownership. Since Mitch lives in your state, I would talk to him.
There are a decent number of cams out there that will pass emissions requirements in CA and NY, the best part about this is that they all make more power than the stock cam. There is a good side to chosing a cam that will meet emissions standards and that being drivabilty. A BIG cam is less
traffic friendly. Thunder racing and MTI along with other forum vendors
have great cams that will meet your needs... I would say to stay with a cam with no more than 224/224 duration and 114 LSA. This is just a guesstamate.
After reviewing all this advice and reading every other cam thread I could find, I'm 95% there on Thunder Racing 224/224 561/561 114. They claim it should be worth around 40HP on my car and get me into the power band quick since I have the 2900 stall converter, while still passing emissions with proper tuning. The LG Motorsport G5 series are enticing, but in calling them, they said none of those cams come close to passing the NY sniffer. Any further opinons, or am I done?
Order it today. I think the TR224 is a great cam and was my second choice before my current cam. Lots of F-body's have run some good time's with that cam.
I just installed th TR224, stage 2 heads and Belanger headers in my buddy's (2c5only21 on the forum) 99 A4 coupe. The power is awesome at and above 4000. It's got a pretty mean lope, too. However, he says it is so awesome that there is obvious clutch slip. Also, we dynoed a few days later and he gained AT LEAST 90hp over stock with the whole set-up on the stock 3.42 gears. I say at least because we ran the car to the 6200 rpm limit and the cam was still pulling and we have yet to tune. From experience, this is a great cam and the 40hp guess w/ cam only is probably a good baseline, more hp if you tune. Good luck.
Awesome cam chart, Blktie8! After reading all the glowing reviews and speaking with Paul at Thunder Racing, I'm going with TR224. Thanks to all who helped. This forum's the best!
