Guys, I have a mildly modified 6 speed and have decided to change the gears. I am leaning heavily towards the 4.10s. Is this too much? Or just right? My car is not a daily driver.
Thanks
4.10s all the way, you will still have a final drive ratio of 2.05 in 6th gear. So your highway driving & mileage should not be effected too much.
How modified is your 6 speed, I am quite happy with the 390's but I was running quite a bit of power and with the stroker I wonder if I would have been better off with the 342's as far as track time goes, with 500 to 550rwhp I love the 390s and I'm sure I would love the 410s equally well there is a diff of 100 to 200 rpm at 80mph---if your car runs in the 120's in the 1/4 it could be the diff in an additional shift, based on the gear ratio's of a m6 at 6500rpm you would tech be maxed at 120mph, with the 390s at 126mph, something to think about---
Get 4.10s unless you are modified enough to need extra room in 4th for the drags. I am getting 3.90s because I run 122mph in the 1/4. With 4.10s that's basically on the rev limiter (6800rpm, I am actually going more like 125 when I let off). Leaves no room for improvement and also beats the **** out of the motor. With 3.90s, at 125mph I'm at like 6400-6500rpm, which is my normal shift point. Can do about 130 at redline (room for some new bolt-ons).
I just got my 4.10's in. Still in the break in period. It definitely is different. I would not worry about highway cruising in 6th- it's actually usuable now. 1st gear is very short now. We have an 1/8 mi track that I run ocassionally. My best mph so far is 88 in 3rd gear. The rpm is usually around 5700 at the traps. I am now worried I will run out of gear just before the traps. I raised my redline to 6400 with the hypertech. I don't think i'll hit the rev limiter, but I made my best ET's shifting right a 6000 rpm. I hope the car is not slower or that I have to shift to 4th right at the traps. The car is much easier to drive and you can be lazy letting the clutch out. I think launching at the track will be much easier, as long as traction is not a problem. I think either gear would be great. I wish I could try both and then make my decision. I am very happy with the 4.10's and i don't think you can go wrong with either one. SCOTT

i am interested in this too
there is a big difference with the M6 and the M12 (ZO6) tranny....
do u have an M6 or M12?
the stock ZO6 tranny and gear is equivalent to having 3.90 gears in a regular C5...
ideally, i would like to be able to finish the 1/4 in the top of 4th....
if i were to trap under 120 with the M6 3.42 setup, would 4.10s be the way to go?
My MN6 car is at 414 rwhp - really kicks in at 4000 rpms - Just got Gears put in and I LOVE the new found power - still in the break in period so I have not hit it real hard or high on the rpm's but the few "spirited" runs I have made me :D :D :D :D :D :D - I debated on 3.9's or 4.1s and my tuner recommended the 3.9s - so that is what I have - makes use of the power I have - doesn't really break loose too bad - can't image if I had 4.10's.
By the way with 3.90's your first gear max comes real quick!
Best of luck to you in your decision - you can't go wrong with either - but for what it is worth, now that I have driven the 3.9's if my car was only slightly mod'ed and was going to stay that way - I would go with the 4.10! JMHO
I would go with the 410's with the m6 and 390's with the m12. I drove a m12 with 410's and to me there was to much wheel spin 1st and 2nd. I got 390's with the m12 best mod I have done so far.
