I notice that the light which tells you to shift into 4th from 1st, isin't lighting up anymore. Do you have to be in a certain rpm range in order to have the light on.
Yes...Others will chime in, but it comes on if you are driving conservatively in first gear generally. If you are putting your foot into it, you will go past the rpm range that determines a 1st to 4th shift is warranted.
Most of us by or build a CAGS eliminator and no longer deal with this stupid "feature".
Do a search on CAGS in C5 Tech. You may have to go to the archives, but you will find hundreds of posts with information. It is a cheap piece to buy outright, and the installation is true plug and play.
I just installed mine over the weekend. It's nice now that I can shift into 2nd whenever I want. With the eliminator, the light still shows but the solenoid does not activiate.
You can buy one from the C5 mall, LAPD or other C5 shops. The price ranges from ~$20 - ~$25.
Others just use a $.05 resistor bought from Radio Shack and hack it themselves.
The skip shift can be very annoying if you drive in traffic or hilly areas where it is not practical to run it out in first gear beyond the skip shift rpm range. My 2003 coupe was only two days old when I put a CAGS defeater from Ecklers. I think it cost about $18 and took all of 10 minutes to put on. Nothing worse than buying a manual transmission and then having a system control which gear you can select. :chevy
