last two days at a slaight acceleration, i've noticed "pinging", as if i used cheap gas or maybe from high temperature, but neither. water temp is about 195 degrees and i only use 93 octane fuel. is there something else that could cause this situation? a little harder acceleration and the knock sensor catches this and retards the ignition, but i can't stand that sound!!!!
any help at all, any experiences?
let me know guys
1) Running too lean
2) Too much timing advance
3) Spark plugs installed are wrong heat range (too hot)
4) Engine needs de-carbonising (v.unlikely)
5) Low engine oil level (although this would cause the engine to run hot)
If you've been playing around with a Predator programmer or have installed the Hypertech Power Tuning from a HPPIII, that would explain points 1 and 2.
I can hear the same on my ´98 A4 coupe when very slightly accelerating and auto is in 4th gear, car running very slow. I can remember to hear this 30 years ago on old cars. Do not know what it is. Would also like to know. BTW gas is 95 and better.

There's no sig and no mods listed, so are we to assume your car is baiscally stock? When your motor pings, does it do so comntinually unless you get into the throttle like you stated, or doea it eventually go away?
1998 stock engine, auto trans, yes the Pinging goes away unpon acceleration.
i started thinking about the "lean" mixture and what provides feedback info to the computer. o2 sensors and such.
I had the same symptoms on my 98. It seems oil from my K&N had coated my MAF wires. Cleaned the wires VERY carefully with alcohol and q-tips. Pinging gone...

I also have a K&N (cone filter) and I guess it's possible that the filter oil could coat the MAF wires and insulate them to a certain extent from the intake air.
This would cause the MAF wires to 'feel' less airflow than normal, which would send a higher resistance to the PCM, which, in-turn, would result in a leaner mixture (because the PCM thinks there's less air coming in).
Mine does the same thing :mad
Took the maf out and cleaned it but noticed no change in low rpm pinging.
I have the blackwing.
I think the next thing to try is the rear knock sensor I seen one or two other members fix with this.
