Yes, I know I should have installed the bypass kit on my '99 but I did not. It locked up on me tonight at the relative's house. Tried everything to unlock it but no luck.
My questions:
If I do get it to unlock by rocking the steering wheel back and forth briskly, is it going to damage the mechanism? Does this just break the pin off?
Also, if the mechanism breaks, is there a need to install the bypass?
I'm wondering if it more advantageous to have the car towed back to my house and install the bypass before damaging the thing.
Can anyone offer some suggestions?
In order to install the bypass, you'll have to first get the column unlocked. Mine locked on me twice and I was able to get it to release by turning/yanking the steering left and right while turning the ignition on and off (not to the point where the engine would start, only to the accessories position). It took several tries, but eventually mine unlocked. Others have had success removing fuse #25 (I think), maybe someone will chime in and let you know which fuse it is for sure. You can also do a forum search on "column lock" and I'm sure it will turn up lots of threads on the topic.
From the posts Ive seen about the hard jerking of the steering while you have the key on... will sometimes unlock it.. but it wont ruin the locking system.. but it will happen again... Ive also seen people, post that it happened once.. they used the proceedure then it didnt happen again for a year..
You may be able to get it unlocked this time.. but I would suggest getting a bypass asap..
