I just replaced the plugs in my '99 coupe with new Boshe platnum +2 plugs. The plugs I removed were AC Delco plugs, stock I think. I was surprised to see that none of the plugs had the pucks on them. Did they all break off, or did AC Delco make some plugs with pucks and others without?
I can't find a reference, but I thought I remembered that the factory had a 2nd source for plugs, and that they didn't have the pucks.
I still had all 8 pucks on mine when I swapped them out at 20K miles.
Funny that we all stress about expensive oil filters and synthetic oils when we have nubs of metal dislodging directly into the combustion chamber!

Yea I agree. The puck is actually ceramic though and I was told it isn't hard enough to do any damage to the valves. It supposedly shoots right out the exhaust valve w/out causing any harm. I hope that's true. .

BTW, my engine idles a lot nicer now!
All delco plugs have/had the pucks. The pucks are platinum that is what allowed them to rate the engines for 100K without a plug change. Of course, as you saw, that is a joke. Where Delco failed is coming up with a high speed manufacturing process that joined the puck (disimilar metals) to the copper electrode securely. It simply failed under real world conditions.
My theory is that these tiny little pieces of platinum (about the size of a pencile dot) would blow right out the exhaust port.
I replaced mine at 13,000 miles and four pucks were gone, and four were still intact. Gee has anyone ever wondered if these little pucks could be getting stuck between the rings and the cylinder walls and causing serious scratches before being expelled out the exhaust? Maybe that could be a contributing factor to some C5's high oil consumtion...
Welcome to the club. For years the guys on the C4 forum have been telling GM about missing pucks, and GM isn't listening. They are STILL using these crappy plugs in the C5s. I just changed the plugs in my /98 and only 2 plugs still had their pucks!! Worst case scenario is they get lodged between a valve and a seat, or if they are thin enough from wear they could get down between the piston and the cylinder. Way to go GM :banghead: :banghead:
There is another Delco plug that runs a little colder and has no platinum puck on the ground electode. Much better than stock and fixed my pinging problem (maybe someone can remember the part number and post here). :D
They all fell off...I changed my plugs on my 99 with 25,000 miles and 6 of 8 were missing..not a good thing. I was only aware of the pucks after reading about it here on the forum.
At 23K miles and almost 3 years old, I found as suspected, the stock spark plugs sucked! My Dynos run in January of 02' read these like a MRI. The color was fine, #3 was the only plug that had the puck remaining and gapped at .055"(Look close you can see it When new the pucks are 1/32" of the gap!). The other 7 plugs went from .093-. 095”: eek: Yep, over .030” overgapped. To say the least it runs real good with Rapidfire #12s gapped at .060.

:iagree: :iagree: :iagree:
I pulled mine out at 15k miles because of the forum and thankfully all the pucks were accounted for. That little puck is small enough to get down by the rings and cause some problems. My C5 does not burn a bit of oil by the way.
