Well my car is locking every other time I try and move it and I need a CLB quick. Who has them at the best price?
I heard jmx was selling some type of set up.
This is my daily driver and I can't afford to get stuck.
I have been thru this already. I'll save you my long agonizing tale of woe about being stranded in the New Mexico desert and just advise that you must get the column lock repaired BEFORE installing a CLB kit or the kit will not work.
Good luck (and I used the COH kit since they are only 15 minutes from my house). Yes, the COH kit is $100 but it worked and the instructions were easy to follow and well written.
Re: I need a Column Lock Bypass NOW!!! (jeanlucpicard)
I just got one from Corvettes of Houston in the Forum Mall (New Products). I also had them overnight it (for $17 to CO). They will ship it on the same day if the order is received by 3 pm. And yes the kit will work when the column is already locked, regardless of what Capt. Picard says (no disrespect). The kit comes w/ a cigarette lighter lead that unlocks the column and the bypass prevents it from happening again.
There is another vendor, but as stated he not a supporting vendor. Besides, as of last weekend, orders were expected to take up to 14 days before being shipped and you are obviously in trouble NOW.
The only downside to these products is they do not totally "fix" the problem. They merely prevent the clb from ever operating.

Re: I need a Column Lock Bypass NOW!!! (lowdowndirty)
I believe J L P was refering to a total malfunction of the column lock, so even if you put power to the unit it would not unlock. If the unit is not funcioning at all and is not intermittent then you would have to repair it first.
Re: I need a Column Lock Bypass NOW!!! (lowdowndirty)
Paul at COH was the one who told me I would have to repair the CL first, then install the CLB. Also, the instructions tell you this and, my own experience was that the solenoid would not always disengage and a couple of my attempts resulted in the wheel releasing but the fuel cutting off when attempting to drive.
Now, all of that said, I think you should repair the CL first, if for no other reason than to get the car in 1 piece again. Then install the CLB.

All
The problem with the lock is that the bypass will prevent the lock from working again and fools the bcm to think it is still locked up. If your column is locked or has been locking up there is always that possibility the BCM has been damaged. That is why I let people know that the fix works but if there is a code or the column is locked the BCM is probably damaged. I think we are all right in our responses just wording them different.
I hear you loud and clear Ben01C5. We pay 1,000$$$ for a car that is full of cheap plastic and mediocre quality components that GM has known have a high failure rate since 1997. But, they play the numbers game and wait for each customer to bring the car in rather than do the right thing and issue a recall. You should have seen the attention I got when the column lock failed.
Well, the column lock issue is now a class action lawsuit that I hope brings the management team at GM to their knees.
My 2001 is just hitting the 50K mile marker and I am suddenly having a ton of electronic issues - my O2 sensors constantly foul out and smoke; my door lock control modules have fried twice; I've had the fuel gauge problem fixed; I've had the column lock problem fixed; my pop up lights have had both motors replaced; my rear driver side differential seal has been replaced; my cigarette lighter does not work - again (I am not a smoker); my 12-disc CD changer faults out a lot; etc etc etc. Gremlins are coming out of the plastic now.
Just glad I bought a quality car. :( I love my vette (I've now owned 3) but the QA/QC is terrible and GM continues to let the buyer pay through the nose for their poor designs.
Just for the record, my 1997 Explorer has just rolled 171,000 miles. The only problem has been an automatic headlight control module failure. That's it. If FORD can build a family wagon fully loaded (this is the Limited model with a 302 V8) and have it run that many miles with kids, etc then why can't GM build the Vette better? Answer - profit margin baby!
I'll probably buy another Vette in the future. Doesn't mean I like the quality though. Lot's of upkeep on a car that should be better considering the cost.
Re: I need a Column Lock Bypass NOW!!! (jeanlucpicard)
I am getting ready to roll 50,k myself. Luckily this is the only constant problem I have encountered. I had the fuel gage problem 2-3 times, but it only happened when I used the gas stations on base. Once I filled back up with Exxon the gauge has been fine.
The CLB angers me to no end. Someone can get stranded, and lose time money and work for a litle pin that locks the column and leaves your vehicle useless. GM knowing about it and doing nothing makes it even worse. :mad
I have a 2000 6spd w/ 50k miles and it locked on me last week for the first time. The dealership replaced it at no cost because it is a recall item. I'm out of warrenty but they cover it anyway. :D

That doesn't mean it won't happen to you again, still need the bypass.
Re: I need a Column Lock Bypass NOW!!! (Pat97Vette)
OK, looking for a simple answer to what may be a dumb question. I have a '99 coupe 6-speed. I have received the recall notices from Chevy but have not had the work done as I've read almost as many bad things as good things about how the column lock operates after the Chevy recall work is done. I have never had the column lock problem (knock on wood). Knowing all that, can I install the CoH column lock bypass and then not have to worry about this at all or should I have the recall work done first? Thanks.

Install the bypass right now and never give the column lock another thought. How's that for simple?
