Re: how long does it take to change a halfshaft ? (BOB CROFT)
Get yourself a shop manual. The best $120 you will ever spend if you are going to do your own work. My recommendation is to replace the entire half shaft. Getting the CV joints on and off a shaft is tricky at best even with the proper equipent. Not sure that the half shafts are available on the aftermarket yet, you might be locked into buying from dealer which will be expensive. Try a wrecking yard or one of the suppliers on the forum to find a low mile piece from a wreck. Job can be done in about 2 hours given all proper equipment and a lift.
Re: how long does it take to change a halfshaft ? (CHJ In Virginia)
I have a manual and just about every tool imaginable to work on cars.
I don't have a lift.
I just found out it's cheaper to buy the whole axle woth CV joints than to replace just the CV alone? $274 vs $284 for a joint alone
So I am going to do the whole shaft.
Installing a CV joint on a shaft is no big deal on older cars, not sure about a C5.....but that is a moot point now anyway......I may check into used parts but with something like this, I'd probably just go with a new one. I hate doing a job twice.
Anyone have a how-to with pictures / short-cuts/ timesavers ?

Sounds like a rear CV joint is going out.....can the joint alone be changed or do you swap the whole shaft ?
Any How-To's ?
Bob,
If it is just a clunk like, in the old days, sounds like a bad U joint, you may be able to just tighten the axle nut. Back it off look for rust re lube and tighten to about 125 ft lbs. (guess on the torque although I have a publication that, I believe, shows it 118.)
