I really like to wind out the gears sometimes when driving and shifting from 1st to 2nd seems fine. I have however noticed a distinct lag in acceleration when shifting from 2nd-3rd gear. Will a Torque Converter eliminate this?

When you select 2nd-gear, it will immediately engage regardless of current RPM or speed (unless downshifting to 2nd would bump the limiter, that is).
2nd-gear is the only gear that will engage in this manner. For example, if you select 2nd from a standing start, the car will stay in 2nd and will not downshift to 1st. Also, as you have noticed, if you manually upshift from 1st to 2nd gear, 2nd will immediately engage. However, as 3rd-gear (and D) are not holding gears, the upshift from 2nd to 3rd will not happen (at WOT) until the programmed upshift RPM/speed conditions are met according to PCM programming (stock is about 5,800rpm). So, if you move the lever from 2nd to 3rd at 4,500rpm, the tranny will not actually shift until 5,800rpm... this is what is causing the 'lag'. Upgrading the TC will not change this... the only way to manually hold ALL gears and change 'on demand', is to install a TransGo shiftkit.
Lag when shifting from 2nd to 3rd? I don't have any lag. As a matter of fact my shifts are quite firm and immediate. I also bark the tires from 2nd to 3rd if I choose to do so. Wait a minute, I have a Transgo shift kit installed and torque management has been deleted. :D :D :D
You definitely need to install a Transgo shift kit. You can firm up shifting thru LS1 edit, Predator or some other tuning device but it will alck in comparison to the Transgo shift kit. :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:
Thanks for the info. I used to have a 99 6 speed. This is the first time I've had an Auto--so forgive my ignorance. What's a Transgo shift kit? Is it expensive, and is there a tradeoff in performance elsewhere if installed???
The shift it alone will not make it perfect as you still have to deal with TQ managment. I used LS1 Edit to completely remove TQ managment and reduce my shift time for 2-3 gear and it shifts like a champ without being too hard like some shift kits.
In my truck I had a converter and Trans Go but still had TQ managment and it still lagged on the 2-3 shift until I did a # on it with LS1 Edit, now the damn truck tries to bark 1-2 gear and 2-3 is definately firm. :)
Does the shift kit allow you to up & down shift the tranny?? Sort of like a stick car without a clutch? Is this practise bad for the tranny with the shift kit? Sorry for all the Q's, but I've got a Predator and wouldn't mind a little more control over the tranny.
You can hold the gears all you want with LS1 Edit tuning also. I didn't do anything special but if I manually shift the car into 2nd and don't shift to 3rd quick enough i'll slam the limiter. Now as fro short shifting, I have never tried that to see if it would let me.
