i had a wet dream earlier about droping in a new chevy crate motor the 574 that theyre producing now....do u think itll fit??? imagine how much fun that would be. :auto:
It would be pretty cool, but you can get only a few HP less in an LS1 and remain more streetable with MUCH better fuel economy. And of course, dont forget the 300+lbs extra you will add to the front end of the car. But if it is gawk factor you are going for when you pop the hood, the BBC would definitely provide that! :D
Im in the process of building a 565ci BBC that will be around 950hp, but it is 14.0 CR, .780" lift cam, etc.. Defintiely not a streetable combination.. It is made to run WOT down the track and thats about it..
Sorry about that. I meant to type >700. one of those days I guess.
In any event, the BBC in a vette with carb and high rise single plane isn't something I think anyone would really do. I was just saying that... > 700hp out of all engine - and theoretically being able to drive that on the street on pump gas.. well that would be cool. and I don't think I've seen an NA LS1 do that yet. A twin turbo 427 LS1 might just do it though :-)
Btw, Hot Rod Magazine (iirc) got 1050hp out of a BBC engine of similar displacement. And yes, streetable, ran on pump gas!
Heh, their budget may be a little more than most people's though. Although, as I recall they didn't do anything that crazy with the engine. But its been a while. If you're interested in specs I can dig up the mag. I NEVER throw a magazine out ;-)
I do agree, BBC's are capable of more power, but with the weight and size disadvantage, im not sure it would be worth it for other than gawk factor.
Bored/Stroked LS1s are hitting ~600hp N/A now, and wait until they get the intake manifold figured out, and then AFR's new heads that are on their way out.. I don't think it will be long until LS1s are in the 700hp N/A area on 94 octane. Mine right now is about 580hp and I drive it everywhere.
I read the article about that BBC you mentioned. That was a pretty beastly motor. They did do quite a bit to be able to keep it running on street gas. The coating of the pistons helped with detonation... The titanium valvetrain is pretty sweet as well. It makes me wonder how long a camshaft with the amount of lift they were running (~.800") would last with driving on the street. Sure it runs on 94 octane but how many hours is that motor good for before it needs to be freshened up, not that many im sure.
Regardless, it was a very impressive motor and I wish I had the cash to put a few of the goodies they used in the 565 we are building. I am hoping these AFR 357cc BBC heads we are going with work as well as they are supposed to. I had them flowed and they flowed 418cfm at .800"... Not too shabby for a conventional BBC head! :D
