I'm trying to install my Hurst shifter on my 2003 Z06 tonight and I'm trying to reverse the rubber isolator boot but, there is a plastic ring on the inner opening making reversing it impossible. How do you do it? This ring seems to be glued on.
While trying to invert this boot that platic ring on it cut part of the boot....oh great! I need some help guys.
I don't remember anything being plastic. It may just be stiff to turn inside-out. Have a look at this link if you haven't figured it out by now. Should be easy. Look at step #17, I think this is what you are talking about. Let me know.
No, it is a plastic rim on the rubber isolator inside lip. My isolator looks a little different. Maybe they changed the design slightly for 2003. I would post a picture but PhotoHost seems to be down again.
In regards to the noise you mentioned on another thread, I noticed the most coming from the large whole remaining after you invert the boot. I drilled a hole in a tennis ball and slid it over the shifter. :yesnod: Works pretty good.
:lurk:
You can clearly see the plastic ring on the inner lip of the isolator. If I try to remove the ring it tears the rubber. Both sides of this part seem a tad different than other pictures I've seen of it. The car was shipped to the dealership in May and I took delivery in June of 2003.
Well I decided I had no choice but to cut the ring off the boot. It was molded onto it and would not invert. From looking at it the plastic ring seemed to click into the stock shifter's little boot, at the base. Making for a tighter connection. Maybe that is why they did a design change.
If want to return to my stock shifter the isolater boot will not be as tight as it was but should still work.
Anyone know of the part number for the isolater boot?
Oh man what a difference! I didn't change the shifter springs and it's great. I also did the PVC cap mod and it fits very nicely. The stock shift boot is a bit baggy but not as bad as I thought it would be.

To shorten your stock boot: Take the boot off the car and push the tip of the boot inward to shorten the boot approximately 1".
IMHO, this works very good and there's no additional cost involved. You can also easily reverse the process if you want to go back to your stock shifter, or whatever.
When you replace the boot and install your shifter ****, the boot will be less baggy and virtually no one but you will know any different.
Or you could spend alot of extra money for a "custom" shorter boot.
