I helped a buddy install a Hurst shifter in his 50th vette. We installed it in accordance with the instructions and it seamed real easy. We adjusted both screws that set the forward (3rd and 2nd aft gear shift) adjustment.
Here's our delima: Upon a test ride we have a shifter rattle while we under load as we ran the car from 2nd and 3rd. We losened the forward and aft adjustment screws to ensure that they are not the cause of the rattle. Has anyone installed a Hurst shifter and had the same rattle problem? The install went like clock work, just like the instructions said. Could we have a bad shift?
Any help would be greatly appreaciated!! Boy do I had rattle niose's!!!!
I don't think that's our problem. When we installed the shifter **** we screwed IT down real tight and installed the center keeper key that was a pain in the a%%%% to get out. while drive you hold onto the shifter in gear and move it so slightly, the rattle goes away. We try applying more tenchion to the TOP side throw screws to help hold the shifter firm. That didn't solve our problem. It's just annoying rattle!!! It sounds like a metal to meatal rattle that you would get if you don't install the plastic end piece onto the bottom of the shifter to the shift linkage. I sure don't want to have to pry that shifter center key piece out.
Gary is right. :yesnod: What you're experiencing is what a large number of Hurst owners have. The **** rattle dilema has been solved in a number of ways. Gary suggested one but others have gotten good results by switching to a heavier aftermarket **** and tightening it good. Some have used pipe tape on the threads and silicone inside the **** cab where the Demon Key you mentioned is.
