Default Oil consumption

How have some of you delt with this problem? Suppose you are using one quart of oil about every 2,000 miles, and the dealer will replace the rings under warrantee. Don't they have to pull the engine and take it almost completely apart to replace the rings? Is the engine ever the same after this? Will the car have all sorts of new squeaks and rattles? Wouldn't it be simpler to just add a quart of oil between oil changes every 3-4,000 miles?

My 2001 re-ringed, removed and replaced engine, is 100% as quiet and smooth as when new. Of course I got a cam put in at the same time, but you know what I mean.
Same with the body and rest of the car. Soon as I got the rings, I also got gears, so then the rear end came out to. No problems, no difference. 9,000 miles on it all now. 33,000 total.
My car burned a qt per 1000 miles, at 2000 per qt, like yours, I don't think I would have done it. I lucked out and got a super good Tech and Dealer. The Wrench was a Vette owner and racer and had been building Vette race engines for 20 years.

:iagree:

It seems most folks on this board have had a good experience with the re-ring. I wouldn't let fear of the process stop you, if the oil burning bothers you that much. On the other hand, my car uses about 1 quart per 2000 miles, and that just isn't enough usage for me to bother with the warranty claim.

Like anything else, it depends on the skill / attitude / etc. of the person doing the work. It should be OK and I recommend you do it. This will not (should not) produce any new "squeaks and rattles" in your car. :smash: :yesnod:

I experience about 3/4 of a quart consumption every 1,500 miles...I'll live with adding the oil...I don't trust the dealership to do the job without screwing something else up.
