I'm installing on my 98 a4 ( Corsa exhaust, Blackwing intake, 3.42 rear end,LS-1 edit tune ) should I go for a TC ( $ running low ) car is for every day use / no racing - just enjoy the feeling.
Yes, If I were you I would find a used one and then have it installed when they do the gears. A good shop will not charge more than a few extra dollars to install since its already apart and ready to be stabbed.
Used TC's range from $400 and up, but are worth every $$$$$$$.
I would keep in mind that although many have gone to an aftermarket TC with a stock tranny with no ill effects, the stock A4 has pretty much all it can handle with the torque multiplacation from the stock converter. You might be one of those that can do it without problems and then again maybe not

I would also look into getting a tranny cooler if you plan on goin with a convertor higher then 3000 stall. I higher stall will heat that tranny up quick and then its all down hill from there for the tranny.
From a labor standpoint, it makes no sense to do the gears without doing the TC at the same time. If you don't, you'll just end up going back and paying double labor once you realize you need the TC. The TC is going to give you the biggest seat of the pants improvement of all the things you mentioned. Pro Torque 2900 stall costs around $600. Higher stall Yank for drag racing, which it doesn't sound like you're doing.

:iagree:
Without question install your gears and T/C at the same time and save on not having to pay labor twice. A good mild street converter would be the Yank 3000 or the Vig 2800. The Vig is less expensive than the Yank, the Vig costs about 699.00 the Yank is about 100.00 more.
YES !! ......Go with a ProTorque 2800 or Vigilante 2800....either will serve you well on the street with little or no PCM modifications.... :yesnod: I would consult with our resident CF transmission expert Steve Atkins of www.eastcoasttransmissions.com  He KNOWS his stuff and is very reasonable for install pricing. His shop is in Fort Lauderdale on Dixie Highway!! Mention my name he'll treat you right
Don't forget the TRANSGO shift kit :yesnod: It's a must have when changing gears and converters
If you are going to be installing 3.42s, and can spare the cash for a torque converter, this is definitely the time to do it. For a daily driver, with 3.42s, I HIGHLY recommend the SUPER YANK 3500 (aka SY3500). It's low torque multiplication ratio keeps your car from being a total animal off the line, which works out good since you will be running with street tires. Don't let the 3500 stall speed number scare you. This converter is awesome on the street.
Feel free to email me if you have any questions or would like some pricing on YANK converters.
:iagree:
However know that this set up will also allow you to get out of your runcraps and into some better tires quickly cause you will wear them out practicing your launch technique
