Anyone else have this problem. I have about 2200miles on the car, at about 800miles that brakes started squealing. It doesn't matter, if I am coming to a stop or just trying to slow down a little. It happens at medium and light pressure. It is driving me NUTS, I was going to mention it to the dealer when I bring it in for an oil change at 3000miles... Are they going to tell me to deal with it or can they do something about it.
Another note, If I basically stop the car short a few times. It subsides for a very short period of time.
Any help, insight, or a go to the dealer and yell at them would be appreciated
Chris
After seeking long and hard for the source of my squeek, It finally dawned on me to apply the red quiet stop compound (red goo) to the metal clips where they contact the pad. Be generous, as any portion that is not being used will wash away or be removed easily.
My understanding is that squakly brakes can be caused form gases attaching themselves to the rotor and metal vibrations.
So, first one needs to do some high speed (90 mph) stops on abs to clean these gases from the rotor and pad.
Then disaaemble the pads from the caliper and place disc brake grease where indicated on the metal retaining parts pads to reduce metal to metal contact.
Also the OEM pads have a "rubberized" compound on the pad of the pad that comes in contact with the piston to reduce vibration. Make sure this is there; it is black in color. I believe this area between the piston and the pad is where the opening product is this thread should be place...but I would not do that until I correctly assemble and cleaned my oem setup.
If you want to go one step further find a flat peice of glass and sand the face of the pads smooth and them champher (sp) the edges (just like a motorcycle racer would) before re-assembly.
Re: Squealing Brakes are KILLLING ME!!! (Kenny94945)
Thanks Kenny,
I will try giving it a few high speed stops(It will be toture, but if I must :) ...If that doesn't work I will bitch at the dealer and make them look at it. It is very loud, I can hear it over the stereo!!! If the high speed stops work, I will have to start taking a longer root to work (the 2.5miles @35mph just isn't very far and is probably contributing to the problem)
I have encountered this with a quite a few vehicles. The squeaks seem to come from a buildup of brake dust from low speed city driving. Freeway runs of about 50-75 miles tends to get rid of the noise but as the low speed city miles add up the squeak comes back. Ceramic pads have eliminated this problem on my vehicles, as well as a few others I am aware of.

The ceramic pads sound like a good idea... I will just beat on it some more, and when it comes time to replace the pads... go for something like that..
I recently put some Hawk street pads on my car and they developed a squeal. I called Hawk and they told me to sand paper the pad. I am trying it tonight, if the rain holds.

Go find a road where you can play race driver for an afternoon. go from 5-100-5-100-5 about 50 times, not just a few. Get thoes brakes red hot, and wear off the top couple of hundredths of an inch of the pads. Then drive around like gandma for 10 miles without using any brakes to let the whole system cool.
Re: Squealing Brakes are KILLLING ME!!! (Mitch Alsup)
I'll see what I can do...It is a little rough here on long island to find that much space w/o the other cars. I am runnning a local autocross this weekend, that should heat the brakes up pretty good!!
Chaase, the squeal (squeak) is most likely coming from the rear pads. I have a slight squeal just before I stop. I had a bad squeal from both front and back when I put aftermarket pads on it. I had to go back to AC-Delco pads and resurface the rotors. Then a quick track day at Road Atlanta to seat them good... :jester
Chaase,
There have been some interesting responses here on this topic.
I, too, have been experiencing the brake squeal and have tried some things to fix it. When I was sure of the fix I was going to post it here.
After cleaning the pad backing plates and anti-rattle clips, I tried putting wheel bearing grease on the front brake pad backing plates and all of the anti-rattle clips. This took care of the squeal for a few weeks until I did some very spirited driving which included several hard stops from 100 mph. The squeal came back worse than ever. This is completely opposite from the responses about doing several hard stops. I don't think the hard stop fix will work more than temporarily, and probably not at all.
Yesterday I bought some Permatex disk brake grease. This grease is designed for squeaks and becomes tacky in a few minutes.
I cleaned the front pad backing plates and anti-rattle clips and greased anywhere the pad backing plate touched the clips, calipers and pistons. The squeal went away. I am hoping this is a more permanent fix but I don't think anything is going to be permanent.
I have not touched the rears. They do not squeal (yet).
Brake squeal comes from metal to metal contact. I don't know how sanding the pads is going to help.
Ever try to sand a brake pad with sandpaper? I have. Never again. Much easier to just rub the pad on a blacktop surface.
I suggest the Permatex or any other brand of brake grease first.
