Paul at Thunder Racing promised 30 HP and that's what I got. 30.2 HP gain to be exact on their 224/224 563/563 114 LSA cam with their cam change kit including titanium retainers. This with stock heads on my 2002 A4. So I expected around 30 HP but what shocked the hell out of me is a 51.8 Lb/Ft torque gain! The car has a mild shake/lope at idle (I love starting this car up now!) and sounds like a frickin' race car at high RPM. All while supposedly (I hope) passing NY emissions. Many forum members have raved about this cam ... they're right!
350.7 RWHP and 370.3 RWTorque. These numbers are low on the dyno probably by 15 HP due to my 3.73 gears.
I have FLP headers with hi-flow cats and x-pipe thru Borla Stingers. I doubt I would have got this gain with stock manifold/exhaust.
I don't get too caught up in dyno numbers because I know Vararam won't show much improvement sitting still and gears actually hurt. But what counts is driving the car, and that I'm very happy with!
Re: Big gains from TR224 cam only (LittleBoyBlu99)
Awesome!
It is a great cam and with proper tuning will even pass Cali emmisions, well not sure now with the whole OBD2 thing.
My only advice to anyone thinking about a cam, is make sure you have headers. A custom cam is almost pointless without headers. Most people I have seen try this only gain MAYBE 20rwhp until they do headers. Dyno in the 330-340 range then with headers BAM they are at 360-390rwhp.
I have that cam only no HEADS or LT headers. I have a 3600 TC and 3.42's and dynoed 340/352, but should run in the 11's with my recent 1/8 mile times used as an indication of what I will run in the 1/4 since it was just recently in cooler weather.
Great CAM, wish I went a bit bigger, but it is fine
I'm happy with the cam also. I'm currently working on tuning it before I get some dyno numbers. Really interested to see what I get. The seat of the pants feel is there, especially in high rpms. Then I will slap on some ported heads that I'm working on and see if I can reach the 400rwhp with the gears :yesnod: If I fall short, I might have to cheat with a little NOS :D
A cam swap and some gears are a very good mod for any C5..Z06's included. I have been using the CompXer 224/224 .581/.581 114 lsa for over 1 year now and have had excellent results from it....just a little more lift than yours.
Since he helped me so much with the cam, I decided to order my FAST intake from Paul at Thunder Racing today. This guy is great ... I was set to also go with BBK 80mm throttle body and he said I should save my money and just port and polish my stock one for half the price. Usually it's the opposite, vendors telling you to buy things you don't need!
About $1700. Definitely have to tune it to have it run right and maximize performance gain. This is a big change in specs from the wimpy stock cam on a 2002 LS1!
