Console Removal on A4 Help! Brake before shift issue.
The Brake before shift lock is driving me crazy on my car. Whenever the car sits for more then 15 hours or so (strange) it won't shift from park because the button won't depress unless a) I hold it down and wiggle the crap our of it forever, 10 minutes at times, or which I discovered recently b) take the button cap of, turn the white plastic pieces and remove the button and spring, and stick a screw driver to depress the metal shaft down and to the side until it pops down.
I know someone had this problem before, but no one could give details
Anyhow, I want to take the console out to take a better look and see how it works, and why it gets stuck.
1) How do I take the console out, where are all the screws? I know of 2 under the console lid/armrest, and 2 under the traction control button plate. What about next to the ignition and on the dash, don’t want to brake anything.
2) What about the **** itself? With the button off, is their a clip under the handle before it slides off? Thanks

There is a little "grill" next to the ignition key (for the climate control temp). Carefully pry it out, under there you will find a Torx screw. Open the Cigarette lighter/ashtray door, there is another torx screw next to the lighter and then remove the ash tray and there is another torx screw under there.
I believe that there is a "U" shaped clip that hold the **** onto the shifter.

If you find the need to remove the shifter use extreme caution after you read the procedure since the shift cable is very fragile and won't bend much before cracking.

The **** is held on with a staple from the back, just pry it out. The plastic boot frame is clipped on with 3 or 4 fingers that pry to remove; they are visible after the console is off.

Hey guys, thanks for all the help so far. How do you remove the plastic ring that holds the top of the boot to the shaft? I was about to try and pop it off, though it was about to crack. This is the top one, inder the shift ****. Thanks again.
