I have TPIS headers and my car is mostly in the garage...never in the rain....so why would the headers rust in less than a yr? It is just surface rust...so I am wondering if it can be neutralized without adversely affecting the jet hot coating????
I've got TTS headers. The rust is just mainly due to any dirt/moisture that was trapped or cought in the coating process, and the heat from the headers creates a expanding zone, so to speak, for the moisture and eventually you get the little rust spots.
Stainless steel headers or recoating is about the only recourse. If I could do it again, would probably goto stainless steel works or LGM headers.
I had FLPs before - the collectors were completely bare and rusted in a little over a year. It was driven in rain/snow though.
My vette, almost never sees rain, never snow, and my TPIS headers have the coating coming off/rusting off at the bottoms of the ends of the collectors (where the mid-pipe connects). They have maybe 6k miles on them.
If you want something that doesn't rust, get some coated stainless headers.
Don't listen to anybody who says they won't rust, because they will.
Re: Why do coated TPIS headers rust? (Mike Mercury)
Thanks for the kind words Mike.
As far as the rusting issue, the manufacturer will probably only tell you that it's not really thier fault, but for a service fee you can have them stripped and recoated.
I have a little issue with my DS header..............this is NOT FROM THE AC discharge and you can see the scratch marks I touched up prior to firing up after the install. No rust in the scratch marks, but below
The PS is fine
Usually inproper prep for the coating/thin coating application is the reason for this.
The vendor I bought these from is looking into it.....less than 1 year on an EDD.
I will sand & put some hi-temp on just like the scratches
Re: Why do coated TPIS headers rust? (ALLTHROTTLE&NOBOTTLE)
thanks for the input...I will contact TPIS and post what they have to say/can do for me.....I am thinking of having em recoated when I have the Intercooled Magnusen installed(when its available.....hopefully December)!
