Default Throttle body porting

I picked up a used TB to port. What I'm wondering is if the throttle motor needs to be removed, or if its "non-serviceable" Part of the reason I bought the extra TB was to have a spare motor.

Yes, the motor is usually removed during porting. It takes the correct tools, and I believe you are correct that it is not serviced separately. I am not aware of a motor failure problem with these, so why not port your core or have it ported?

My '97 A4 was professionally ported specifically for automatics to keep the idle speed near stock and still increase flow by removing the "lip" above the throttle blade. Idle is about 600 in gear when at normal operating temp, and it has very little surge or overspeed when cold. My engine is stock except for Corsa exhaust and Z06 intake plumbing.

I beta-test C5 ported TBs, and this is the most drivable one I've ever had. It's completely "invisible" in normal driving. Well, the bright red powdercoat sorta stands out; my preference is semi-gloss black to match the rest of the intake system.

My belief is that anything mechanical will fail, its just a question of when.

Anyways, porting the lip out and smoothing everything was what I was going to do.

So if I get the anti-tamper torx bit the motor will come off?

Yes, that is all that you will need to take off the motor. Remove the four screws and it will come right off!

Interesting outlook. FWIW, throttle-by-wire components necessarily are sourced by the OEM with very high mean failure times. There are probably many other things on a C5 which will fail first. Check out the motor and gears when you get it apart. Notice how the spring loaded close point is a few degrees open. This is the "fail-safe" postion which allows you to continue to drive the car to a safe stop if (or when :) ) the motor fails. Fortunately computer controlled engines have a number of backup or "limp-home" modes.

Yep. Save the grease and gasket.

Good luck!

Is the diameter of the throttle plate increased on ported versions? Or is it just ported up to the plate??
