Re: REVERSE Gear is Really getting on my nerves.. (chuckster)
I would check the shifter adjustment and shift rod bolt 1st of course, but it sounds like reverse gear or synchro are on the way out :yesnod: The good news is that reverse gear can be replaced without removing the trans by removing the rear diff and rear trans housing...
Re: REVERSE Gear is Really getting on my nerves.. (chuckster)
Sometimes happens to me too what you have to do is shift it into first gear then put it in reverse it should go in perfectly fine if not shift it to first then back to neutral let go of the clutch then into reverse. Hope this helps
I'm gonna have to change my Diff in a month or so. Any of you that have done it, please send me some pointers. I know I need a lift, no problem. I know I need an adjustable transmission stand, shouldn't be a problem. And I know I need to watch as I lower the assy, as not to damage the front firewall. How is the service manual for this task? Anything they left out?
Question #2. Do I have to pull the torque tube, tranny and diff or can I just lower enought to pull the diff off? Looks like once I clear the ABS module, I should be able to unbolt and remove.
:nonod:

What would make the reverse synchro wear out? I only have 20k miles
Re: REVERSE Gear is Really getting on my nerves.. (chuckster)
Hi, I had the exact same problem. All gears okay, but reverse pops out and grinds. At first it only happened now and then. Then I had to keep the hand on the stick to keep it from popping out. By the time I got it fixed even that wasn't enough.
The shift fork for the reverse gear was completely worn off. Probably due to the occasional grinding the gears were also worn off, and both reverse gears had to be replaced. Chevrolet Europe took about €370 per gear, plus tax, that's over $800 for the two gears. They could be replaced without removing the transimission.
My advice: Have it checked as soon as possible. The shift fork is cheap, the gears are more expensive (even if you are not ripped off).
Resurrecting a VERY old thread here....but hey - at least I'm using the search feature! I have the exact same problem with my reverse. Just wondering if there was any more info from people who dealt with this more recently than 9 years ago!
All gears in my '99 6 speed shift without a problem, albeit a little less smooth than I would like the shifts to be. But, reverse...is another story. I have to go to third, and then into reverse so it doesn't grind. Then, I have to keep pushing forward on the shifter as I am backing up or else it will pop out of gear and grind something awful. Could it be the linkage...a shift fork...synchro or gear? To adjust the linkage, I have to take pretty much the whole center console out correct? Any advice?

It's most likely worn synchronizer ring, worn engagement tooth on the reverse gear and deformed shift fork pads. 99% of all the T56 I build need the reverse gear. Time for a rebuild.

Is this something I can do in my garage? Or does a pro have to do it? How much am I looking at having it done vs. doing it myself?

This is what's involved in doing this if you're going to do it yourself in the garage. You have to remove the rear cradle to drop the transmission/diff. Once you have the trans/diff out, you have to seperate the diff from the trans. Remove the tailshaft housing. Now you can access the reverse gear/synchro/fork/fork pads.
If you have to pay to get it done. Please PM me for a quote.
