Me and my friend are thinking about removing the ABS on his 2001 Z06, have any of you done this and if so, what issues did you run into? We just don't want to have any crazy PCM/BCM issues where it does not see the ABS and puts the car in reduced power mode or somthing like that.
Before we get any "don't take it off, it's dangerous" etc. comments, this is a race only car now-a-days.
It's actually kind of heavy, but the main reason is for room. We're trying to fit an ATI F-1R in there and we're 99.9% sure we can do it with the ABS out of the way.
Pull all of the ABS fuses from the underhood fuse box to see how the computer will respond (5, 52, 53). You'll get a few codes on the DIC, but that's it.
I replaced the brakes. All I get is occaisonal indication on the dash to service the system. Has no effect on performance. I hit reset and the lights go out.
You will get some traction control and ABS codes, but everything should still work. Get an adjustable brake bias valve - it may be helpful for tweeking afterwards. Then just remove the ABS and reconnect the lines to eachother.
If you want to test it first undo the electical connector to the ABS without pulling any fuses etc. Its easy and you will know exactly what to expect.
I left my ABS on my racecar. My 97 has the ABS module in the back on the rear subframe. I find it helpful in wet conditions with big brakes.
Why the new dampener? What kind of RPM's are you planning on?
Active Handling is tied to your ABS system so taking it off will render the other one useless. Active Handling is good to have in the Vette, saved my butt a few times I got too happy with the accelerator.
Alot of racecar drivers dislike ABS coz they end up fighting it to gain control of the car. Rally cars do not have them coz they want to induce slipping and drifting to go on corners faster.
