I'll try to keep this short. When I tried to install my new Ken King shift boot I found that the previous owner or the dealer had cracked the shift boot and it split through on one side when I tried to remove the factory boot.
Checking around I found that you had to buy the shift boot and ring as an assembly. The cheapest one I found was 67.50 plus shipping. There had to be a better way.
Here's what I did.(sorry no pics, the camera is broken)
I took the ring and drilled two holes in the rim(one on either side of the break). The key is to make sure the holes are level with each other. I then used a quick drying super glue to hold the pieces together so I could do the following:
I ran a zip tie through the holes and cinched it as tight as I could. I then coated the entire break area with jb weld and clamped it in position. I let it dry for 24 hours. I reinstalled the new boot and then installed the entire thing in the car. It's been four weeks and it still is holding fine. Total cost was about $5. Anyone who wants more detail can e-mail me and I'll try to help.
Re: Broken shift boot ring? This might help (Mark 84ltblu)
I broke mine installing a new Ken King boot, so I cut a piece of plastic from a coffee can top and smeared super glue on either side of the break, joined the collar at the break then laid the 1/4" wide X 1" long plastic strip across the joint and clamped it for several hours. So far it's held.
My cost was almost ZERO. But your method is certainly more elegant.
