Im moving to southern Texas and rumor is that car theft is high down there (those from the area feel free to comment either way) and I was thinking about installing a manual kill switch. Has anybody done this?? Im looking for some form of directsion/write up, with pictures if possible. Any help is greatly appriciated before I go tearing into the cars ignition system. Thanks
Re: Anybody install a kill switch??????? (FLYNAVY30)
Alot of the stolen cars and parts floating around here in Pensacola come from Texas so I would say some of those rumors are true. I would think, have not looked into it, that a kill switch would not be that hard to install.
Re: Anybody install a kill switch??????? (adame780)
Kill switch?? When I park in long term I cover the car, park in a secured garage and pull the fuel pump fuse and throw it in my briefcase. A kill switch would be good, but like was said, given the secure nature currently built into the Corvette today and the fact that every crook knows it, they will probably flat bed it or tow it anyway. At least that is what seems to be the most popular. Hey maybe we get one of those bicycle chains or cables and chain it to a pole?? :jester
Years ago back east they caught a group using a flatbed tractor and trailer and a big fork lift. they just drove up and fork-lifted the car onto the truck. Today they can scoop them with a Jer-Dan rig.

Re: Anybody install a kill switch??????? (FLYNAVY30)
I installed one about three years ago. Not due to any theft issues necessarily; just some additional piece of mind. The install was pretty easy as these things go. I spliced into the clutch pedal switch wiring. Don't have pix or write-up, but there's only two wires going to the switch so take your pick as to which one to use. Use good quality connections and a good quality switch (doesn't mean expensive necessarily). I used a 10 amp rated rocker switch and hid it really well along with making sure the wiring was well concealed too. Go for it!
Re: Anybody install a kill switch??????? (FLYNAVY30)
i think this would be a great idea. I had one installed on my previous car for around $40 bucks. I feel that any preventative measures will increase your chances of not losing the car or risking damage. The fuel pump fuse for long parking periods is a great idea too, thanks for that one!
"if they want it, they will get it" while this is very true and i do agree. i still feel its best to try and prevent a thief that may not have a tow truck and the more of an inconvience it is for him or longer it takes, the less likely he is going to keep messing with it. JMHO?

:withstupid: There are many ways to wire a switch, but the easiest would be to just put a simple on/off switch in line with the installed theft deterrent relay. You can mount the switch anywhere in the car or under the hood, and it doesn't matter which wire you splice into, as long as you break the connection going into the relay the car won't start even if they have the keys.
If you still have a column lock mechanism, you can just put a switch on any one of the wires going to the column lock. Depending on the wire, it'll either 1) make the column never unlock, or 2) shut off the fuel pump if they do get the car started and go over 1.5mph. It'd be a half hour install, with 20 minutes of that just figuring out where you want the switch mounted.
But, chances are if a theif is going to steal a C5, he's just gonna flatbed it.

....... Either that or stick a gun to your head when you come out to start up the car. :banghead:
VR
Exactly what I was thinking.
We need something that allows the car to be driven for about 1 minute or so, then shuts itself down, locks all doors, winds up all windows and shoots a hefty shot of Nitrous oxide into the cabin putting the thief in a comatose state, turning on the car alarm untill law enforcement or coroner office employees arrive.
Would be very effective unless the car is a convertible of couirse .

thanks for the tips guys, Im gonna go for it. It cant hurt, and I figure the majority of jackasses who steal cars are just thugs. Obviously, if an organized car theft ring wants the car, theyre gonna get it.

:yesnod: Ezzackly :yesnod: The clutch pedal switch feeds into the TDR. The reason I chose the switch over the relay (located in the right-hand footwell) was primarily the accessability of the wiring and the ability to install the kill swich somewhere within reach without having to run longer wires than necessary. Either way will work though. :D
