Your 6-speed takes 4.1 quarts (overhaul) of Dexron III automatic transmission fluid according to the owner's manual. No misprint, you use auto tranny fluid in the 6-speed. If you plan to use another fluid make sure it meets the same specs as the Dexron III fluid. Not sure how you would remove all the stock fluid. I don't see a drain plug on the bottom of my 6-speed. Maybe a service tech on the forum can answer this. :chevy
Hmm, my drain plug was on the lower right side. Now my fill plug is on the upper left. :yesnod:
Patches, were you on your back and which way were your feet,,,,and were you down wind from your feet at the time you viewed the plugs.,,,
We need to get that guy in here who didn't know which way to turn his oil drain plug... I'm sure he could clarify left from right..
A simple fluid change takes less than for a rebuild. My suggestion is to make sure the thing is full, drain it, and measure how much you got out, then put that much back in.
Easier than that. Have the car level when you drain the fluid (i.e., on 4 jack stands, not just two), then fill until fluid starts running out the fill hole. Should take approximately 4 quarts.
Also, loosen the fill plug before the drain plug; they can be on there really tight!
Finally, DON'T USE GEAR LUBE! I don't know of any modern manual tranny that uses the old style gear lube. Any Dexron III compatible ATF will work just fine.
