Hidden performance for LS1 and LS6 intake manifolds
I have ordered the LS6 intake manifold to install on my '98. I have not taken delivery of the intake yet. While examining ( inside ) the stock LS1 intake manifold I noticed three vertical tubes, about 3/4 inch in diameter, extending from the manifold's base to the bottom of the runners. My thoughts are they served as sprue points during manufacturing and/or support for the runners.
Anyway, they seem to have no real purpose and may create some unwanted turbelence at mid to high RPMs.
My questions are as follows:
What is their purpose?
Does the LS6 intake has the same vertical "rods"?
Are there any performance advantages in removing them?
Re: Hidden performance for LS1 and LS6 intake manifolds (BADNBLK)
I have experimented with modified LSX intake manifolds and you'd be surprised at the forces the manifold sees as a result of pressure differentials. Without the three 'pilons' in the manifold a stock manifold will fail the floor from fatique flexing due to these differential pressures... Any performance advantage would be small. My advice is not to remove them.
