Default Battery Replacement Question

My '01, with 50,000 miles, has the factory battery, now 2 1/2 years old. The car starts fine. I often drive cross country and would be majorly inconvenienced by a battery failure in the middle of the dessert. Question: Would you guys recommend installing a new battery at this time (even tho the old one is apparently ok) in order to avoid an emergency situation? I guess I am really asking is: when the battery does die, will I see warning signs or will it go from good to bad overnight?

Thank you.

Default Re: Battery Replacement Question (Glassbergs)

My '01 had the original battery, the glass mat model, go bad in October. It was replaced under warranty with another Delco 75-7R battery. Car has 12,000 miles. If your car is still under warranty save yourself the money and just keep driving. Warning signs your battery is about to give up the ghost, it won't hold a charge. :nonod: Car will start fine but if you leave the hood up or the doors open while you do some detail work (clean the car for non-Corvette owners) the battery voltage drops off quickly. It might start but will barely turn over and then it catches. Your volts will display fine, 14-14.5 volts while you are driving. All that means is the alternator is doing it's job. The glass mat batteries were not as reliable as GM hoped for. They stopped using them either in late '03 models and all of the '04 have non-glass mat batteries to the best of my knowledge. Good replacement if your car is out of warranty is the Optima Red Top. Fits correctly and lots of cold, cranking amps. Hope this helps. :chevy
