I've had FLP headers with the cats on my car for over a year now. I just started getting an annoying rattling sound on my car that is intermittent so haven't been able to figure out what it was until yesterady. Started my car up yesterday and it was making the rattle noise real bad and didn't go away so I pulled it back in the garage and got it up in the air. Got underneath the car and the rattle noise was coming from the FLP cats.
Anyone have this problem before? It seems like if the cats had gone bad it would always rattle from past experience. I think from inspecting them that it could also be an exterior problem not inside that is making the rattle. The flanges are still tight where it connects to the headers/x-pipe so that's not the problem. The heat shields around the cats were lose so I think this is what is causing the rattle. If I just banged on the cats lightly with my hand they would make the rattle noise.
Any suggestions on how to get this problem fixed. Should I contact FLP or take it in to one of the performance shops here in Dallas to look at?
I know that a lot of people with F Bodys have had this problem. The FLP clamps are a great idea, but after time they either wear out, or get hit, or somethign happens and they break.
I have read more than one story of it happening on an FBody, so im sure it can happen to your vette. If i were you, I would call FLP and see what they say. Maybe you can get a new set of clamps out of it!
I had this happen to me earlier this year. The actual catalyst material inside the cat housing came dislodged and was rattling...not to mention blocking 80% of the exhaust flow. Drop the cat and look inside it, you'll see it floating around in there.
It's nothing to do with the clamps or anything being loose.
I contacted Mitch about it, he said send the cat back, I did and he had a brand new one waiting on my doorstep the next day, no questions, no hassles at all.

WRONG! Ive had this rattle twice once on each cat. The rivets that hold the heat shield to the cat have broken off on one side and that is what is rattling. Put the car on a lift pull the cat off and i bet my butt that the rattle is comming from that. Just stand on either side of the cat and rip off the metal shield.
