Re: C1283--excesive time to centre steering (Naylin)
Someone else jump in if I'm wrong, but it sounds like you might need to replace your steering wheel position sensor - it's at the bottom of the column, and you have to take the column out to replace it. You can do it yourself, but it will take a while...
Re: C1283--excesive time to centre steering (Naylin)
what's happening is the stability control is being turned off because the brake ecm hasn't seen the steering angle sensor center.more than likely it's bad,but what valves did you have changed?
Had purchased an entire package from Nate. Valve spring was apparently recalled but broke therefore the valves springs had to be replaced..these were then replaced

Believe you'll find this is the same problem as C1286 Steering Sensor Bias Malfunction code which many people have reported on and posted fixes for in the past.
My guess is that cars without active handling report C1286 and cars with report C1283.
If you do a search for C1283 you'll find lots of reports and fixes. Basically what happens is the steering shaft is disconnected while they're working on the car and reconnected with the steering wheel or front wheels in a different direction. So basically you've ended up some multiple of 180 degrees out from where you started. Steering sensor then thinks the car is continually turning which doesn't allow the active handling to calibrate and it throws the code. You can check the orientation with a tech 2 or a multimeter.
Quick check is to take a voltage reading from the light blue wire coming from the steering sensor with the ignition on and the front wheels pointing straight ahead. (Theres actually 2 blue wires, one is lighter than the other and closer to the centre of the plug.) Should read approx 2.5 V. If you're reading less than 2.5 v then disconnect the steering shaft and turn the steering wheel in the direction which increases the voltage until it reads 2.5 V and then reconnect the steering shaft . Take care turning the wheel with the steering shaft disconnected as there is a clock spring for the airbag which is easily broken if wound too tight. This happens if you turn the wheel the wrong way too many turns.
