Hi. I'm thinking about swapping my stock heads and cam on my '03 vette coupe and going with something that will give me more power. I want something strong but that won't make my car sound like crap. How safe is a heads and cam swap for the engine? I plan on keeping my car and really don't want engine troubles as a result.
Just to get the tiff started....I have had Cartek H/C packages on my car since it had 15,000 miles, and the car has 83,000 now. The Stage 2 package is good and the Stage 2X package is good, it all depends on what your desire for the car is. I had raced my car regularly so when I had the chance to upgrade to the 2X kit I did, but the Stage 2 was also great for street or strip. Make a realistic list of your desire, and follow it. If you want the best of the best, then the X package is for you, and you can still drive to and from anywhere you want to go without concern. In some cases the "standard" Stage 2 package is as quick and reliable as the X package so don't let that deter you. Figure out what you want to spend...double it...maybe triple...and go with it !
There are alot of different options when it comes to heads & cam setups. What we need to know is your goals on the car, and your plans for racing or driving daily. I've installed several Patriot heads & our 231/237 camshaft that has gone 440rwhp+ with the Patriot 5.3l head.
We also offer a ls6 style head if your wanting a more aggressive setup, but personally for a car that you want to have great street maners & make awesome power I'd go with something like a 224/224 581 581 on a 114 with a set of the 5.3l heads.
5.3l heads retail for 1295
The ls6 style heads are 1795
Just some food for thought, can you tell us all what your wanting from the car?
I have worked with alot of guys wanting to do their own work. We have found setup's that work and some that don't. If you want some help drop me a line.

I've been considering the same upgrade. Rough idle or "loping" is a potential consequence of an aggressive cam. I'm not a racer, but I like power and a real stealth sound. So Andy at A&A recommends a 220 cam and stage II heads for a smooth, understated idle. Do you want them to know that you're here, or that you're gone?
